Synopsis

A321 flight crew reported #1 engine failed in cruise flight at FL340. Flight safely diverted to a suitable alternate airport for a safe landing.

Narrative

This is an addendum to my previous report covering this event. This report should provide better detail as my previous report was rather vague. While at cruise at FL340 we experienced a #1 engine failure. We requested priority handling with ATC. As we were already slowing and would not be able to maintain altitude we requested Fl 240 and began our descent. The F/O (First Officer) checked the QRC for any items there. Once we determined there were no QRC items I transferred control of the aircraft to the F/O and began the ECAM actions. Upon completion of these items I checked follow up items in the QRH which suggested possible engine restart. We had no fire indications; there were no noticeable vibrations and N2 was still turning. I referenced the QRH for an inflight relight. The engine started but shortly after the AVAIL notice appeared it failed again. Went back to QRH engine failure procedures to complete the considerations. Shortly after our initial request for priority handling; ATC had recommended ZZZ and ZZZ1 as possible diversions. We were pretty much abeam ZZZ when the failure had occurred. By the time we had made our initial descent; run the QRC; ECAM items; followed up with the QRH; tried an engine relight and gone back to the QRH after the restart failure; we getting fairly close to ZZZ2. More or less about the same distance as any appropriate alternate. Since we had not had any type of fire or control issue. The F/O and I decided that landing at ZZZ2 would allow us time to complete the remaining task pertinent to our problem without being unnecessarily hurried to allow the safest landing possible. I contacted Dispatch; briefed the passengers to our situation and resumed pilot flying duties. We landed on runway XXR at ZZZ2. Got checked over by ARFF (Airport Rescue Firefighting) and taxied to the gate.Cause: Some items in the QRH were a little slow to be found. Hyper links for engine relight" and "fuel imbalance " would be very helpful if they were located in the Engine Failure follow up items."

Second reporter narrative

While in cruise at FL340; #1 engine failed. Priority handling was requested. Made an initial descent to FL240 then FL180. Transferred control to F/O (First Officer) and ran appropriate check lists. Determined that there was no noticeable damage and tried to an inflight relight. Engine started then failed almost immediately. After all check lists were completed; notified Flight Attendants and told them of the problem and to expect a normal landing. Made similar announcement to passengers. Briefed ILS XXR at ZZZ2. Reassumed flying pilot position and landed in ZZZ2.CauseCheck lists and procedures worked very well and felt natural. They definitely helped control the tempo in the cockpit while making sure everything was properly completed.
