Synopsis
B787 flight crew reported while exiting the runway the nosewheel skidded and a taxiway excursion occurred.
Narrative
During landing rollout; while approaching a high-speed taxiway exit; I used light rudder input and the aircraft response did not feel consistent with expectations; and the visual picture did not appear correct. The main landing gear remained over the runway centerline throughout this period. Based on aircraft handling characteristics and visual cues; I assessed that the aircraft would not safely make the high-speed taxiway. I communicated this assessment by stating words to the effect of 'I'm not going to make that one' and committed to continuing straight ahead on the runway centerline using rudder input steering. Shortly thereafter; the Captain applied tiller input in an attempt to make the high-speed taxiway exit. I do not recall a positive verbal transfer of aircraft control. Upon observing the tiller input and corresponding heading change; I voiced my concern for our ability to make the turn. After clearing the runway environment; the aircraft was stopped briefly. The Relief Pilot contacted the cabin and reported that smoke had been observed externally; the cabin was verified to be safe with no injuries.Following crew discussion; the aircraft was taxied to a remote area for an inspection. It was subsequently discovered that the aircraft contacted taxiway edge lighting. Coordination was completed with Ground Control; and the Captain made a PA advising passengers of the situation and the presence of an airport maintenance vehicles. After the inspection confirmed the aircraft was safe to taxi; the aircraft was taxied to the gate where maintenance conducted an inspection.Cause: I would say communication; and the direct cross wind with gust contributed. The length of flight also played a small role.

LANDING RN XXL AT ZZZ. FO AT CONTROLS AFTER A NORMAL LANDING... FLAPS 25; AUTOBRAKES 2; DRY RUNWAY AND GOOD WEATHER; WE PLANNED TO CLEAR THE RUNWAY AT HIGH SPEED TAXIWAY 1. NOSE WHEEL SKIDDED WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ALIGN AIRCRAFT WITH HIGH SPEED TAXIWAY 1 AND LEFT MAINS ENTERED THE GRASS AREA; AIRCRAFT APPEARED TO BE FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY SO WE TAXIED TO A REMOTE SPOT AND CALLED FOR AN INPECTION OF AIRCRAFT; AIRPORT DISPATCHED VEHICLE WHO INSPECTED LANDING GEAR AND ENGINES; FOUND NO ABNORMALITIES OR DAMAGE. REPORTED THAT WE HIT SOME TAXIWAY LIGHTS ON NORTH SIDE OF TAXIWAY 1. CONTINUED TO GATE AND MET MAINTENANCE THERE.Cause: High speed
