Synopsis
Air carrier Captain reported a runway incursion during taxi. Flight crew stopped and notified ATC.
Narrative
During taxi in for flight to ZZZ Day 0. I followed four other aircraft taxying on Taxiway 1 to hold short XXC at Taxiway 2. I entered the information in the FMS as one of the ways to back up the clearance. Did not enter correctly; leaving myself the thought that we were cleared to cross XX center at Taxiway 2 behind the other two aircraft ahead of us that had been cleared to cross. Just as I was vocally asking the FO if we were cleared to cross; he had already began to tell me to stop! I immediately stopped the aircraft aggressively. Aircraft was on a wet surface and did slide a little as the brakes locked and the nose went over the solid strips of the hold short line. First officer immediately notified ZZZ tower that we were holding short XXC but our nose was over the line. They read back as to understand we were holding short XXC. I immediately keyed the mic and instructed the tower that we were holding short XXC but the nose was over the hold short line XXC. They subsequently had to issue a go round to an aircraft landing on XXC. Cause: Lack of sufficient attention as PIC. Relied too much on the industry tricks we use to back up ourselves with clearances as we taxi on the ground at various airports. Did not verify with FO in a sufficient amount of time remaining to stop successfully regardless of surface conditions. Suggestions: Always verify crossing and hold short clearances regardless of personal understanding and backups with sufficient time to allow a sudden realization of the error and comply successfully.
