Synopsis

A Pitts S2 pilot reported the canopy detached from the airplane during takeoff.

Narrative

This flight was a local flight conducted for the purpose of practicing air work. After receiving a briefing via ForeFlight and completing a preflight inspection; I entered the aircraft; secured myself; and locked the canopy. I then started the engine and taxied to the run-up area to conduct the pre-takeoff checks. After requesting taxi instructions from ground control; I taxied to the runway hold short at Runway XXR; Taxiway 1. I completed all before-takeoff checks and informed the tower that I was ready for departure. I was issued takeoff clearance and taxied onto the runway to begin the takeoff roll.As power was advanced and the tail began to lift off the ground; the canopy began to shake; then swung open and departed the aircraft. I immediately reduced power to idle and maintained directional control; aborting the takeoff while remaining on the runway. Once the aircraft was slowed; I informed ATC that the canopy had departed the aircraft and advised that there may be foreign object debris (FOD) on the runway.ATC asked if I required assistance; I advised that I did not and requested clearance to taxi back to my hangar; which was granted. After shutting down the aircraft; I contacted airport operations. Airport personnel conducted a runway sweep and recovered the canopy and broken plexiglass. Upon initial inspection; the canopy latch was found in the locked position. At this time; I am unsure why the canopy departed the aircraft; as I recall locking it prior to departure.
