Synopsis
Part 107 UAS pilot reported conducting a UAS flight in controlled airspace without LAANC authorization. Upon being informed of this; the pilot landed the UAS.
Narrative
On Day 0 at approximately XA:55pm I conducted a flight near the ZZZ Airport to capture photos for a client. The on-site client communicated to me that the ATC manager at the ZZZ Airport wanted me to contact him. I called him and he notified me that I was flying too high for the area; even though I was not in a zero grid. My error was that I neglected to check the airspace because I just forgot to do so. I had a backlog of shoots and I used the day to do a handful of them and forgot to check the airspace on any of my shoots (which I accept full accountability). I will also mention that I was reminded that DJI had removed geofencing on their drones and that also contributed to my false sense of compliance; even though I was approved to fly via LAANC at a few locations around another local airport months ago. I should have known better as a commercial UAS pilot that the lack of geofencing does not eliminate or replace the need to follow Part 107 regulations and apply for authorizations.Once the manager notified me of my altitude I immediately apologized; admitted fault; suspended my operation and grounded the drone. The drone was not in the path of any planes landing or taking off as it was outside of the zero grid. No evasive action had been taken. This incident has made me more aware and responsible in knowing that no client job supersedes safety and Part 107 compliance. Air safety is paramount and the absolute priority before launching. I will do a better job moving forward in pacing myself and making sure the airspace allows me to fly; apply for the proper authorizations if needed and follow the Part 107 regulations for each flight.
