AN SMA PLT TAXIED ONTO A RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.

Narrative

I WAS FLYING FOR PLEASURE; LOCALLY; IN A NORTHERLY DIRECTION AT THE SHORELINE OF LAKE MICHIGAN; S OF WAUKEGAN. I SET MY XMITTER AND CALLED WAUKEGAN REGIONAL ARPT BUT GOT NO ANSWER. I TRIED REPEATEDLY. I COULD SEE THE 'T' ON THE RADIO BUT NO RESPONSE. I THOUGHT MY HEAD SET MAY HAVE BROKEN SO I TRIED THE HAND MIKE BUT TO NO AVAIL. I CONTINUED N ALONG THE LAKE; CHANGED RADIOS BUT COULD NOT RAISE ANYONE. I COULD HEAR BUT NOT XMIT. I KNEW X AVIONICS MIGHT STILL BE OPEN; AND IF IT WAS MINOR; THEY COULD FIX THE RADIO. I CHKED FOR TFC WHILE STILL TRYING TO XMIT; BUT IT WAS NO USE. I TURNED; CHKED FOR TFC AT THE ARPT -- THERE WAS NONE. I ENTERED DOWNWIND; BASE; FINAL AND LANDED. I TAXIED TO A TIE DOWN AREA WHERE A FELLOW SAID THE TWR WANTED TO TALK TO ME. TWR QUESTIONED ME AND I EXPLAINED THAT I HAD LOST MY XMITTER BUT IF IT WERE MINOR I WAS GOING TO HAVE IT FIXED AT X AVIONICS. AT FIRST; REALIZING THE RADIO WAS WORKING; I THOUGHT OF GOING OVER AND HAVING IT CHKED OUT BUT IT HAD GOTTEN LATE SO THE SHOP WOULD BE CLOSED. SO I ASKED THE TWR TO TAXI TO RWY 5 FOR TKOF. THEY SAID TAXI TO RWY 5. WHILE I WAS TAXIING; I HEARD THE TWR ASK AN SMT AT RWY 5 HIS INTENTIONS. HE SAID HE WAS CHKING SOME THINGS AND WOULD BE A WHILE DOING RUNUP; ETC. THE TWR THEN CALLED ME AND SAID TKOF AT THE INTXN (A1) IN FRONT OF YOU. I SAID OKAY I CAN DO THAT. WHEN I GOT TO THE INTXN I CHKED FOR TFC; THERE WAS NONE. I WAS ON THE LINE AT THE TIME. I LET THE TWR KNOW I WAS READY TO GO. THE TWR SAID YOU'RE ALREADY ON THE RWY; TKOF WITHOUT DELAY. THIS I DID. I FEEL I ACTED IN A SAFE MANNER -- IN LNDG AND ON TKOF. THE RADIOS WORKED OKAY AFTERWARDS; BUT I WILL CHK THEM OUT CAREFULLY. I FEEL I ACTED IN A RESPONSIBLE MANNER. THE DISCREPANCY AT TKOF COULD BE DUE TO THE POS AND DISTANCE OF THE TWR FROM THE INTXN (A1) AND THE ORDER TKOF FROM THE INTXN (A1). HOWEVER; I DID FURTHER CHK FOR TFC; ETC.
