AN ACR MLG CREW GOT CAUGHT IN LOW LEVEL WIND SHEAR RESULTING IN A TAIL STRIKE.
Narrative
WE WERE VECTORED FOR A VISUAL APCH. IT WAS ROUGH AND WE COULD SEE WHITE CAPS ON THE WAVES BELOW US. I BRIEFED FOR A VISUAL APCH; BACKED UP WITH THE ILS; AUTO BRAKES MEDIUM; AUTO SPOILERS ARMED. I USED THE FLT DIRECTOR IN THE APCH MODE FOR THE ENTIRE APCH. WINDS WERE 190/25. WE ASKED FOR 2 WIND CHKS ON FINAL AND 2 WIND CHKS WERE GIVEN TO OTHER ACFT ON THE FREQ FOR A TOTAL OF 4. AT NO TIME WAS ANY MENTION MADE OF GUSTING WINDS OR WIND SHEAR. AT ABOUT 200 FT WE PICKED UP LIGHT TURB AND AIRSPD VARIATIONS OF PLUS OR MINUS 5-10 KTS FOLLOWED SHORTLY BY A 10 KT PERFORMANCE INCREASING SHEAR. AT 30-50 FT WE LOST ABOUT 15 KTS. I INCREASED PWR BUT WE VERY FIRMLY TOUCHED DOWN AND WE BOUNCED. AT THE TOP OF THE BOUNCE (AS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE) THE AUTO SPOILERS DEPLOYED AND WE VERY FIRMLY TOUCHED DOWN AGAIN. SOME OXYGEN MASKS DROPPED AND THE SO RPTED THAT THE TAIL SKID LIGHT WAS ON. JUST WONDERING WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY; WE START SECOND GUESSING. THE SO MENTIONED THAT THE ATIS 'MAY HAVE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT WIND SHEAR' BUT HE DOESN'T WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING. NOT THAT THIS WOULD HAVE PREVENTED ANYTHING BECAUSE I WAS COMFORTABLE WITH ALL OUR ACTIONS INCLUDING 4 WIND CHKS ON FINAL. I THINK IT MAY HAVE PUT ME IN A GAR MODE VERSUS A LAND MODE.
