SJC 7 DEP SID. STARTED TURN AT .4 DME NOT 1.8 DME. BRIEFED DEP THOROUGHLY; HOWEVER; BOTH PLTS HAD NOT BEEN TO SJC FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS -- 2 YRS PF (COPLT) HAD IT IN MIND TO START TURN TO 110 DEGS BEFORE 1.8 DME NOT AFTER. TRACKED OAKLAND 124 DEG RADIAL INSTEAD OF 121 DEG RADIAL. CAPT PLACED OAK VOR IN PF SIDE OF FMC WHILE PF PLACED 124 DEG RADIAL FOR FILMORE IN PF SIDE OF FMC. 1 NOTE: ON SJC 7 DEP SID; THE OAKLAND 121 DEG RADIAL IS FOR REF AND NOT PART OF THE PUBLISHED DEP. HOWEVER; YOU CANNOT RECEIVE FILMORE 124 DEG RADIAL SOON ENOUGH TO TRACK INBOUND WITHOUT OVERSHOOTING RADIAL. SO; YOU HAVE TO NAV OFF OAKLAND VOR TO AVOID PASSING RADIAL ON 110 DEG HDG. DSNDING TO 12000 FT; AUTOPLT CAPTURED ALT; BUT FAILED TO LEVEL OFF. AUTOPLT WAS DISENGAGED AND MANUALLY LEVELED AT 11800 FT. OVERSHOT FINAL APCH AT LAX RWY 24R. CTLR WAS GIVING VECTORS FOR LOC COURSE; TOLD 'MAINTAIN 210 KTS.' TURN 30 DEG BANK ONTO FINAL WAS NOT GIVEN IN TIMELY MANNER AND SUBSEQUENT HDG TO REINTERCEPT WAS GIVEN. CTLR DID NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT ACFT SPD. NOTE: CTLR EXPECTED US TO CALL ARPT IN SIGHT FOR VISUAL. HAZE AT LAX PREVENTED US FROM DOING SO. REASONS: AFTER INITIAL INCORRECT TURN AT SJC; PF LOST COMPOSURE. REST OF FLT WAS TERRIBLE; TRYING TO STAY AHEAD OF AIRPLANE AND MAINTAIN PROFESSIONALISM. HAVING NOT BEEN TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR SOME TIME HAD A LITTLE TO DO WITH IT. THE MAIN REASON WAS PROBABLY THE FAA CHK AIRMAN SITTING BEHIND ME SCRIBBLING LIKE MAD ON HIS NOTE PAD.
