Narrative
I WAS TAXIING FROM GATE VIA 'STANDARD TAXI TO RWY 3C' AT DTW. THIS WAS THE FO'S THIRD LEG OF INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE. PRIOR TO TAXI WE DISCUSSED THE REQUIREMENT FOR CONTACTING E GND CTL AT OSCAR 7. AS WE APCHED OSCAR 7 WE SWITCHED TO E GND. WE HAD PASSED OSCAR 7; THE C CONCOURSE; AND WERE APCHING THE FOX TXWY WHEN I REALIZED THAT WE ACTUALLY HADN'T MADE CONTACT WITH E GND. THE GND CTLR'S WORKLOAD WAS VERY HIGH WITH A LOT OF FREQ CONGESTION. AS I APCHED THE FOX TXWY; I WAS STARTLED BY AN ACR ACFT FLT STOPPED SHORT OF TXWY FOX ON THE OUTER TXWY. I SLOWED AND CHKED TO MAKE SURE WE HAD ROOM TO PASS AND PROCEEDED ONTO THE FOX TXWY. AT THIS TIME; E GND ASKED FOR OUR POS. I STOPPED THE ACFT ON FOX SHORT OF RWY 09-27 AND RPTED OUR POS. GND ADMONISHED US FOR PROCEEDING PAST THE C CONCOURSE AND RIGHTFULLY SO. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO CONTINUE STANDARD TAXI TO 3C. THE ACR FLT MADE A COMMENT ON THE FREQ THAT HE PERCEIVED US TO HAVE CUT IN FRONT OF HIM. I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE TO HIM AND WOULD LIKE HIM TO KNOW IT WAS NOT DELIBERATE. HE HAD HIS LIGHTS OFF AND HAD HE TURNED THEM ON OR FLASHED THEM IN A TIMELY MANNER IT WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME A HEADS-UP TO THE SIT MUCH SOONER AND SOMETHING I WOULD HAVE APPRECIATED. HE WAS INSTRUCTED TO PULL INTO THE RUNUP AREA FOR A WHEELS UP DELAY. WHEN WE WERE #1 HE TURNED ALL HIS LIGHTS ON US. THAT AND SOME OF HIS COMMENTS ON THE FREQ WERE UNPROFESSIONAL; DISTRACTING; AND INTIMIDATING; FACTORS THAT DO NOT FOSTER SAFETY OF FLT. DTW GND IS A VERY BUSY; DEMANDING; AND DISTRACTING PLACE; AND I WILL BE MORE VIGILANT IN THE FUTURE. I WILL ALSO BE MORE CAREFUL OF MY REVIEW OF THE CHART 10-8 PAGE AND THE BOLD PRINT AT THE BOTTOM STATING: 'DO NOT PROCEED BEYOND THE END OF CONCOURSE C UNTIL CONTACT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED WITH GC- E.' I WOULD LIKE TO COMMEND THE GND CTLR'S HANDLING OF THIS SIT. PERFORMANCE AND PROFESSIONALISM WERE OUTSTANDING UNDER HIGH WORKLOAD CONDITIONS.
