POTENTIAL CONFLICT OCCURS WHEN SMA PVT PLT GETS VERTIGO AND EXPERIENCES A HDG TRACK ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION IN A NON ADHERENCE TO AN ATC CLRNC INSTRUCTION.
Narrative
I HAD FILED AN INST FLT PLAN FROM KDAY TO KPIT AT 5000 FT MSL. APCHING THE PIT TCA I WAS INSTRUCTED BY CTR TO CLB TO 6000. TOPS WERE ABOUT 5000. I HAD TUNED AND RECORDED ATIS INFO. THE CEILING WAS MEASURED 1000 OVCST; VISIBILITY 7. NEXT ATIS INFO RAISED THE CEILING TO MEASURED 1100 OVCST; VISIBILITY REMAINED THE SAME. PIT APCH ADVISED ME TO EXPECT VECTORS FOR RWY 10R. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO DSND TO 5000 AND ADDITIONAL VECTORS WERE GIVEN. AS I APCHED THE FINAL APCH COURSE; I WAS INSTRUCTED 'KEEP YOUR SPD UP TO 140 UNTIL THE MARKER; CLRED FOR THE ILS 10R APCH; MAINTAIN 5000 UNTIL ESTABLISHED; CONTACT TWR ON 119.9.' THE FREQ WAS VERY CONGESTED AND I WAS UNABLE TO CONFIRM IF MY ALT WAS 4000 OR 5000. I BELIEVED IT TO BE 4000 AND STARTED DOWN. WHILE ADJUSTING MY SPD TO 140; CHANGING TO TWR; AND TRYING TO CONFIRM MY ALT; I FLEW THROUGH THE FINAL APCH COURSE. AT THIS POINT; A HOLE IN THE CLOUDS APPEARED AND I SAW AN ACR MLG AT ABOUT MY 1 O'CLOCK POS AT ABOUT 1/2 TO 3/4 MI AND ABOUT 300 FT BELOW ME. I BELIEVE MY ALT WAS ABOUT 4300 MSL AND MY HDG ABOUT 070. I REALIZED I HAD PASSED MY FINAL APCH COURSE AND STARTED A STEEP R TURN TO HDG 110. I CHKED THE HSI AND IT WAS OFF TO THE R BUT IT WAS NOT PEGGED. I DIDN'T REALIZE THE TURN HAD GIVEN ME VERTIGO AND WHEN I LOOKED BACK AT THE ATTITUDE INDICATOR THE AIRPLANE WAS 10-20 DEGS NOSE DOWN AND IN A 45-60 DEG R TURN. THE VSI READ DOWN 2000 FPM. I WAS AT 3500 MSL BEFORE I RECOVERED AND THEN CLBED BACK TO 4300. I WAS AT 4300 AND ABOUT HDG 340 WHEN THE TWR SAID 'SMA X ARE YOU ON FREQ?' I RESPONDED THAT I WAS; AND HE SAID MY CLRNC WAS MAINTAIN 5000 UNTIL ESTABLISHED. I RESPONDED; 'I HAD A LITTLE PROB THERE FOR A MIN.' TWR SAID 'FLY HDG 270; MAINTAIN 4000; CONTACT APCH ON XXX.X. I CONTACTED APCH AND FLEW AN UNEVENTFUL APCH TO 10R. MY INST TIME IS ABOUT; ACTUAL: 22.1; SIMULATED (HOOD): 55.0; SIMULATOR: 36.2; TOTAL 113.3. I BELIEVE THE PROB AROSE BECAUSE OF THE 'KEEP YOUR SPD UP' INSTRUCTION. IT CAME AT THE VERY TIME THAT I WANTED TO SLOW THE AIRPLANE. MY ATTN WAS DIVERTED WHILE I ATTEMPTED TO SORT PRIORITIES. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ANY INSTRUCTION IN MAINTAINING A MIN SPD ON APCH. IT WAS 1 MORE BALL JUGGLE AND I BELIEVE IT CAUSED ME TO DROP THE INBOUND HDG BALL. I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE 1 OF THE REQUIRED MANEUVERS WHICH HAVE TO BE DEMONSTRATED ON THE INST FLT TEST.
