AN OUT OF TOWN PVT PLT GOT A LITTLE BIT LOST AT ILM AND TAXIED ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY; INADVERTENTLY.
Narrative
AFTER LNDG ON RWY 24; I WAS INSTRUCTED TO EXIT THE RWY ONTO TXWY F. IT WAS A R HAND EXIT. THIS PUT ME ON A PATH DIRECT TO MY FBO. I CONTINUED TO IT WITHOUT INCIDENT. UPON DEP; I NOTIFIED ILM GND CTL OF MY INTENTIONS; THEN I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 24. AS I TAXIED AWAY FROM THE FBO; I JOINED TXWY F BELIEVING THAT THIS WOULD LEAD ME TO THE PROPER LOCATION INTENDED BY GND CTL. TXWY F APCHED THE ACTIVE RWY. AS I CAME TO THE HOLD SHORT AREA; I STOPPED. THERE WAS LNDG TFC ON ABOUT A 2 MI FINAL. I WAITED FOR THE TFC TO LAND AND CLR THE ACTIVE; THEN I CONTINUED ONTO THE ACTIVE. AT THIS TIME I HAD SWITCHED TO THE TWR FREQ AND THE TWR TOLD ME THAT I HAD ENTERED ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY WITH LNDG TFC! I STATED YES I SAW THE TFC AT ALL TIMES. THE TWR THEN SAID WHERE ARE YOU GOING? I REPLIED TO CONTINUE TAXIING TO RWY 24. THE TWR THEN REPLIED STOP AND TURN 180 DEGS TO GO BACK ACROSS THE ACTIVE RWY. AS I TURNED 180 DEGS AND BEGAN BACK ACROSS; THE TWR THEN SAID OK JUST TURN 90 DEGS R AND BACK-TAXI DOWN THE ACTIVE. THEN I DID SO. AS I APCHED THE END OF THE RWY AREA; THE TWR ADVISED ME TO COPY DOWN A TELEPHONE NUMBER TO CALL UPON REACHING MY DEST ARPT. CONCLUSION: I BELIEVE THAT THE CAUSE OF THE MISCOM WAS PARTLY MY FAULT BECAUSE I WAS NOT AWARE THAT TXWY F WAS NOT ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ACTIVE. BUT PARTLY THE PROB SHOULD BE THE TWR'S FAILURE TO ASK ME WHERE I INTENDED TO TAXI TO AT THE TIME I STOPPED AT THE HOLD SHORT LINES AND AWAITED INCOMING TFC. AND THEN TO BE TOLD TO GO AHEAD AND BACK TAXI THE ACTIVE ANYWAY. THERE WAS NOT AN INCIDENT CAUSED BY THIS.
