Synopsis

MLG FLT CREW EXCEEDS ASSIGNED ALT ON INITIAL CLB.

Narrative

DEPARTED RWY 34L AT SLC ASSIGNED HDG 280 DEGS AND ALT 8000 FT. (PRIOR TO DEP WE HAD A MECHANICAL AND AN ACFT SWAP.) APPROX 1 HR 5 MINS OUT OF 7000 FT MSL (3000 FT AGL); I CALLED FOR SPD 250 KTS (VNAV) AND AFTER TKOF CHK ON HDG OF 280 DEGS AND CLBING. WHILE FLYING I WAS MONITORING TCASII AND OUTSIDE FOR TFC. THE ALT ALERT WENT OFF AT 8300 FT MSL. I IMMEDIATELY LEVELED THE ACFT AND DSNDED TO 8000 FT MSL FROM APPROX 8400 FT MSL. ATC (DEP CTL) NEVER COMMENTED. WE WERE THEN ASSIGNED HDG 310 DEGS FOR ON COURSE. NOTE: WE FLY AIRPLANES WHICH HAVE NOT TOTALLY BEEN STANDARDIZED IN THE ALT ALERT SYS. A COUPLE OF OUR AIRPLANES ONLY GIVE A LIGHT WARNING APCHING AN ALT WHILE ALL OF THE OTHERS GIVE AURAL TONES BOTH APCHING AND DEPARTING THE ALT SET IN THE ALT WINDOW (WHICH IS THE STANDARD THE COMPANY IS STRIVING FOR). IN TALKING WITH OTHER COMPANY PLTS; THIS WAS THE SECOND ALTDEV USING THE NONSTANDARD ALT ALERT SYS IN 1 WK. THE CHIEF PLT WAS APCHED REQUESTING SUPPORT IN GETTING THE SYS STANDARDIZED. I FEEL ANOTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS THE COMPANY'S PROC OF CALLING FOR AFTER TKOF CHK OF 3000 FT AGL; WHICH IN THIS SIT CAME AT APPROX THE SAME TIME THE 1000 FT TO LEVEL SHOULD COME.
