SMA ON DEMO FLT LANDS GEAR UP.

Narrative

IT WAS REALIZED THAT GEAR WAS NOT DOWN WHEN SCRAPING NOISES WERE HEARD AND THE PROP STARTED TURNING SILVER AT THE TIPS. IT WAS A SICK FEELING AS THE AIRPLANE SLID TO A STOP -- ONE OF 'I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S HAPPENING TO ME' (EMBARRASSING) AND THAT THE BEAUTIFUL AIRPLANE IS NOT SO BEAUTIFUL ANYMORE. AS THE AIRPLANE STOPPED I SMELLED A SMELL OF BURNING RUBBER AND METAL; ETC; SO I TOLD THE PAX TO EXIT QUICKLY. I WAS RIGHT BEHIND HIM WITH FIRE EXTINGUISHER. I THOUGHT THE AIRPLANE (AN SMA) COULD CATCH FIRE BUT IT DID NOT. I WAS SURPRISED. I WAS DEMONSTRATING THE AIRPLANE TO A STRANGER I HAD JUST MET. HE WAS A POTENTIAL BUYER COMING BACK TO THE ARPT AFTER LETTING HIM FLY IT FROM THE R SEAT. I TOOK OVER. WE WERE A LITTLE HIGH SO I REMEMBER SLOWING TO GET BELOW GEAR SPD TO DROP GEAR AND FLAPS. PLANE LANDED WITH FLAPS DOWN BUT NOT GEAR. WE WERE HAVING CONVERSATION ALL THE WAY DOWN TO SHORT APCH. I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED ALL CONVERSATION AND CONCENTRATED ON DOING WHAT'S RIGHT -- FLYING THE AIRPLANE AND LNDG CHKLIST. FROM NOW ON A STERILE PERIOD SHOULD BE ENACTED IN MY PRIVATE FLYING DURING CRITICAL PHASES OF FLT TO PREVENT SUCH MISHAPS AND SAVE THE CHIT CHAT FOR THE GND. THE STERILE PERIOD SEEMS TO WORK FOR THE AIRLINES REAL WELL. THE AIRPLANE PERFORMED PERFECTLY. NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE; JUST COSMETICS. THE PLT WAS THE PROB. SHOULD HAVE POLITELY STOPPED CONVERSATION WITH PAX AND NOT DISTRACTED MYSELF FROM EASY JOB AT HAND.
