Narrative
WE WERE CLRED FOR THE BRADE 2 ARR INTO RDU. SOMEWHERE NEAR WILMINGTON; ZDC CLRED US DIRECT BRADE. OUR FLT PLAN SHOWED US AS RNAV EQUIPPED; AND WE WERE SORT OF. WE HAD AN OPERABLE OMEGA ON BOARD. HOWEVER; OUR COMPANY REQUIRES THAT WE BOTH BE TRAINED IN THE USE OF THE OMEGA BEFORE WE CAN USE IT FOR NAV. (NOT ALL OF US ARE.) I'M ONE OF THE ONES WHO HASN'T BEEN TRAINED ON THIS PARTICULAR PIECE OF EQUIP. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE USE IT AND I KNOW THE BASICS; BUT WE WERE NOT LEGAL TO USE IT. SO UPON RECEIVING THE CLRNC DIRECT BRADE; I DECIDED TO DO A 'POINT-TO-POINT' ON THE VOR-RMI. (NOTE: BRADE WAS NOT EVEN IN THE OMEGA; AND NOT KNOWING HOW TO PROGRAM IN A NEW POINT; WE COULDN'T HAVE USED IT ANYWAY.) MY INITIAL HDG WAS 330 DEGS FOR BRADE. A FEW MOMENTS LATER; ZDC QUERIED ABOUT MY HDG; AND TOLD US TO FLY 350 DEGS. EVENTUALLY; AS I REFINED MY POINT-TO- POINT; WE WENT PRETTY MUCH DIRECTLY TO BRADE. HOWEVER; IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH EASIER TO ASK CTR FOR A HDG; AND JUST CONFESS THAT WE WERE NOT RNAV EQUIPPED.
