A CPR SMT ABORTED ITS TKOF DUE TO FOD TO L ENG.
Narrative
UPON INITIATION OF TKOF ROLL; IMMEDIATELY NOTICED NOISE ON L SIDE OF ACFT AND ACFT VEERED TO L. IT FELT LIKE A BLOWN TIRE; HOWEVER IT WAS AN ENG FAILURE. WE IMMEDIATELY ABORTED; PULLED OFF RWY AND TWR RPTED FIRE AND SMOKE FROM L ENG. THE PIC SHUT IT DOWN AND DID ENG FIRE CHKLIST WHICH FIRED 1 FIRE EXTINGUISHING BOTTLE IN ENG. WE ASKED TWR TO VISUALLY CHK OUR L ENG BECAUSE WE NEVER RECEIVED A FIRE INDICATION IN COCKPIT. THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS STILL SOME SMOKE COMING FROM ENG; SO WE SHOT THE SECOND FIRE BOTTLE AND TWR RPTED THAT SMOKE WAS SUBSIDING. WE TAXIED IN TO RAMP AND EXITED ACFT. UPON MECH'S INSPECTION; THEY FOUND A CARPET MAT LIKE THAT LAID ON GND UNDER DOOR. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: A 'RED CARPET' MAT WAS PLACED ON THE WING OF THIS CPR SMT BY A MECH WHO THEN MOVED THE ACFT WITH A TUG. THE MECH LEFT THE MAT ON THE WING INSTEAD OF PLACING IT IN FRONT OF THE DOOR AS EXPECTED. AS THE FLC HAD ALREADY COMPLETED THEIR PREFLT INSPECTION; THEY DID NOT LOOK FOR THE MAT OR ANY OTHER ABNORMALITY. ON TKOF ROLL; THE MAT WAS SUCKED INTO THE L ENG; RUINING BOTH ENG AND MAT. THE ONLY FIRE WAS THE MAT BURNING INSIDE THE ENG. THE RPTING FO STATES THAT THE ACFT MANUFACTURER TOLD HIM THAT AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS; INCLUDING SUCKING BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT KEYS THROUGH THE ENG; HAPPENS ABOUT ONCE A MONTH TO THIS TYPE JET SMT. THE RPTR STATES; THAT BECAUSE THE 'RED CARPET' IS STILL IN USE; ONE OF THE PLTS NOW MAKES A QUICK WALK AROUND THE ACFT TO SEE THAT ALL MATS ARE IN THEIR PROPER PLACES.
