Narrative

I AM THE PLT OF AN EARLY SMA WITH NO ELECTRICAL SYS. ON JUL/FRI/93; I WAS ON A XCOUNTRY TRIP FROM LYONS; KS; TO CLARK; SD. I WAITED AT YORK; NE; FOR VFR WX. WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE YORK ARPT MGR; I READ ON THEIR WX SYS THAT VISIBILITY AND CEILING ALONG MY RTE WERE IMPROVING AND WOULD ALLOW ME TO FLY VFR ON TO CLARK; SD. I DEPARTED YORK AT APPROX XY00 AM AND DID HAVE VFR CONDITIONS TO JUST S OF THE PLATTE RIVER AND COLUMBUS; NE. AT XY46 I FLEW N APPROX 5 MI WITH LIMITED VISIBILITY AND CEILING; AT WHICH TIME I TURNED S. I HAD NO PREVIOUS PLANS TO LAND AT COLUMBUS. I CONSIDERED THE NEED TO FIND A LNDG STRIP AN EMER. WITH LITTLE TIME TO LOOK UP FREQS; WITH COLUMBUS IN SIGHT; I CALLED COLUMBUS UNICOM. I INFORMED THEM THAT I WOULD BE XING OVER RWY 32 AND WOULD ENTER A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 14. COLUMBUS UNICOM ANSWERED WITH FIELD WIND AND DIRECTION AND NO OTHER TFC. DOWNWIND; BASE AND FINAL WERE STANDARD PROC ON RWY 14. ARPT MGR TOLD ME I HAD ENTERED IFR CTLED AIRSPACE WITHOUT CLRNC. AT COLUMBUS I WAS INTERVIEWED BY PHONE BY FAA INVESTIGATOR. HE ACKNOWLEDGED MY INQUIRY AND TOLD ME THE NUMBER OF THIS FORM.
