I WAS NWBOUND (HDG 310 DEGS) TO KENOSHA; WI; RECEIVING ADVISORIES FROM CHICAGO APCH. REQUESTED AND RECEIVED VECTORS AROUND CHICAGO TCA. DETERMINED MY VOR INOP AND RPTED IT TO ATC. NOTE: FREQS XXX.20 COULD NOT BE RECEIVED. TUNING FREQS XXX.40 WOULD RECEIVE XXX.60. RADAR SVCS WERE TERMINATED 5 MI SE OF WAUKEGAN; IL. I MISTOOK UGN FOR BATTEN; WI. TURNED SSW TO FLY TO ENW. THE SECTIONAL DID NOT MATCH THE LANDSCAPE BELOW. PROCEEDED SSW APPROX 10 MI; THEN E TO THE SHORELINE. I CANNOT REMEMBER MY EXACT COURSE FOR APPROX 5 MINS. FLEW N ALONG THE SHORE TO UGN. CLBED TO 5000 FT MSL AND CALLED MILWAUKEE APCH. TOLD THEM 'I AM UNSURE OF MY POS; I THINK I'M OVER RAC.' MILWAUKEE APCH TOLD ME I WAS OVER UGN AND ENDED RADAR SVC. I CALLED UGN TWR AND RECEIVED SEQUENCING TO LAND. TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE: 1) ASK ATC THE ARPT IN FRONT OF ME WHEN RADAR SVC WAS TERMINATED. 2) IMMEDIATELY CALL ATC WHEN I FIRST REALIZED THAT I WAS UNSURE OF MY POS. 3) REQUEST A HDOF FROM ATC OR RADAR SVCS TO ENW; INSTEAD OF UNTIL I WAS CLR OF THE TCA.
