Narrative
THE WX BRIEFING FOR SNY NE BEFORE DEP SHOWED 5000 FT BROKEN 20T. THE WX BRIEFER STATED TSTM BTWN SNY AND BFF; MOVING TO THE NE AT 25-30 MPH. WE DEPARTED FOR SNY AND WHEN WE WERE WITHIN 50 MI WE DEVIATED SLIGHTLY FOR WX. ATC INFORMED US THAT THE CURRENT SNY WX SHOWED 5000 FT OVCST VISIBILITY 1/2 MI; TSTM; HVY RAIN SHOWERS AND HAIL. WHEN WE WERE 50 MI OUT OF SNY. WE CALLED SNY UNICOM AND ASKED FOR AN ADVISORY. SHE INFORMED US TSTM HAD PASSED; AND SHE HAD SENT IN A SPECIAL OF 5000 FT OVCST 6R-. WE INFORMED ATC AND HE CLRED US FROM 7000 FT TO 6000 FT. AT 22 MI OUT OF SNY WE COULD SEE THE ARPT. WE ASKED ATC FOR A VISUAL. ATC SAID HE WAS UNABLE UNTIL HE RECEIVED NEW WX. AT 20 MI OUT OF SNY WE HEARD A DENVER FREIGHT COMPANY DEPART SNY VFR AND CONTACT ZDV OFF OF SNY ENRTE TO DENVER. UPON REACHING 6000 FT; WE CONTINUED TO THE VOR. WE TRIED TO CONTACT ATC; BUT AT THAT ALT WERE TOO LOW TO RECEIVE THEM. WE STARTED A HOLD AND CONTACTED SNY UNICOM TO VERIFY THAT THEY HAD INDEED SENT THE SPECIAL WX OBSERVATION. SHE ASSURED US THAT SHE HAD. WE THEN ASKED HER TO PULL THE WX UP ON THE SYS FOR SNY. SHE VERIFIED THAT THE SYS SHOWED 5000 FT OVCST 6R-. WE THEN CONTACTED COLUMBUS RADIO AND CANCELLED IFR; LEFT THE HOLD AND LANDED. ONCE ON THE GND; I BEGAN TO WONDER ABOUT THE SPECIAL WX INDICATING SNY VFR; SO I CALLED COLUMBUS. COLUMBUS RPTED THAT THEY SHOWED SNY AS 5000 FT OVCST VISIBILITY 1/2 MI TSTM HVY RAIN SHOWERS AND HAIL. ENCLOSED IS A COPY OF THE SYS WX RPT FOR JUL/MON/93. WE DEPARTED DENVER AT XA20; ARRIVED SNY XB36. THE NEW WX CAME OUT AT XB08; INDICATING VFR. I FEEL PROPER PROCS WERE FOLLOWED; AND THE TRIP WAS UNEVENTFUL.
