AN ATX SMA LANDED AT AN NOLF THINKING THAT IT WAS A PUBLIC ARPT.
Narrative
WHILE PLANNING A VFR TRIP TO NAVARRE BEACH; FL; I LOOKED ON THE NEW ORLEANS SECTIONAL AND NOTICED 2 FIELDS IN THE AREA TO CHOOSE FROM. ONE A GRASS STRIP AND THE OTHER WHICH APPEARED TO BE AN UNCTLED PAVED STRIP THAT WAS BETTER SUITED FOR THE SAFETY OF THE FLT. UPON RESEARCHING THE AFD; ONLY THE GRASS STRIP WAS LISTED. THE PAVED STRIP IS IDENTED AS NOLF HOLLEY. THERE IS NO INFO ON THE SECTIONAL; AFD; OR AIM AS TO THE ABBREVIATION OF NOLF AND WHAT IT STANDS FOR. I FILED A VFR FLT PLAN TO NOLF HOLLEY WITH NO MENTION OF IT BEING A MIL FACILITY. MOST MIL FACILITIES I KNOW OF ARE MARKED AFB; AAF; NAS; ETC. NOLF IS NOT DEFINED IN THE SECTIONAL INDEX NOR ON THE CHART; AIM; OR AFD. I HAVE SINCE BEEN INFORMED THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO FIND IT IN A DOD PUB WHICH IS NOT EASILY AVAILABLE TO CIVILIAN PLTS. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT A FEW YRS AGO THAT THESE NOLF ARPTS USED TO BE IDENTED WITH THE WORD (NAVY) BY THEM. BEFORE REACHING THE ARPT; I NOTICED ON THE CHART NO CTAF. I ASKED PENSACOLA APCH WHAT THE CTAF IS AND THEY CAME BACK WITH TRY 122.8. AS RADAR SVCS WERE TERMINATED; I XMITTED MY INTENTIONS AND LANDED. AFTER LNDG; I NOTICED SOME PEOPLE STANDING ON THE SIDE OF THE RWY FLYING RADIO CTLED AIRPLANES. THEY ASKED ME WHAT MY PROB WAS AND INFORMED ME I HAD JUST LANDED ON A NAVY BASE. A PETTY OFFICER CAME OUT AND TOOK MY NAME AND NUMBER. IN CONCLUSION; I DO KNOW THAT I CANNOT LAND AT A MIL FACILITY WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION. THE FACT IS; I DID NOT KNOW THAT THIS WAS A MIL FACILITY.
