SMA PLT LANDS ON CLOSED RWY. UNAUTH LNDG AT NON TWR ARPT UNICOM.

Narrative

ON THE EVENING OF SEP/THU/93; MY WIFE; 2 FRIENDS; AND I DECIDED TO GO TO SILVERWOOD THEME PARK TO VIEW THE EVENING AIR SHOW AND HAVE DINNER. AS FRIENDS WERE ARRIVING AT SANDPOINT ARPT IN DIFFERENT CARS; WE WERE DELAYED IN OUR DEP. ALSO; BY COINCIDENCE NO ONE POSSESSED A CLOCK OR WATCH. NOT WANTING TO ARRIVE WITH THE ARPT CLOSED FOR THE AIR SHOW; I CALLED SILVERWOOD UNICOM (122.7) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND INQUIRED AS TO AIR SHOW TIME; ETC. ADVISED THEM OF LOCATION AND ETE (ETA UNKNOWN). ARRIVING IN THE PATTERN; I SEE THE 'X' ON RWY 21. I CALLED UNICOM AND ASKED IF ARPT WAS CLOSED OR IF WE COULD STILL LAND. A NEW VOICE (AIR SHOW ANNOUNCER) ASKED ME HOW FAR OUT. AT THAT POINT; I WAS OVER THE FIELD AND 1 OR 2 MINS FROM LNDG. 'YOU ARE CLRED TO LAND;' HE SAID. I REALIZED HE HAD NO CONNECTION TO ATC AS FACILITY IS UNCTLED. I CONTINUED WITH MY APCH ANNOUNCING MY LOCATION AND INTENTIONS. ON FINAL I RESOLVED TO LAND 'ON THE NUMBERS' AND CLR THE RWY ASAP IN CONSIDERATION OF THE AIR SHOW (IMPENDING). NOT INITIALLY REALIZING THE 'X' WAS CONSTRUCTED OF LUMBER; MY TAILWHEEL DID LAND ON IT CAUSING NOISE; SUBSEQUENT 'CHATTER;' BUT NO DAMAGE. RESULTED TO THE ACFT. SO MUCH FOR LNDG ON THE NUMBERS.
