Synopsis

SMA LIFTS OFF PRIOR TO REACHING SUFFICIENT FLYING SPD. RWY EXCURSION.

Narrative

I ATTEMPTED TO DEPART COLUMBIA; CA; ARPT IN MY ACFT. ADMITTEDLY; I AM A RELATIVELY LOW TIME PLT WITH SLIGHTLY LESS THAN 100 HRS; AND LESS THAN 6 HRS IN THIS TYPE ACFT. AFTER ACCELERATION ON THE ACTIVE RWY; THE PLANE STARTED TO LIFT OFF SHORTLY AFTER INDICATING 40 MPH. I ATTEMPTED TO HOLD THE PLANE ON THE GND; AND IT BEGAN TO PORPOISE VIOLENTLY. ULTIMATELY; I LOST CTL AND IT VEERED OFF THE RWY AND UNFORTUNATELY; HIT THE PARALLEL TXWY WHICH HAD RECENTLY BEEN REPAVED. BECAUSE OF THE REPAVING; THE TXWY WAS QUITE A BIT HIGHER THAN THE SURROUNDING AREA AND IT CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE NOSE GEAR AND FRONT OF THE AIRPLANE. HINDSIGHT AND THE INSIGHTS OF SEVERAL OTHER TYPE CLUB MEMBERS THAT WERE PRESENT SUGGEST THAT THE INCIDENT MAY HAVE BEEN PRECIPITATED BY THE MODIFICATION OF THIS ACFT WITH A MORE MODERN NOSE GEAR THAT ELEVATES THE NOSE (AND LOWERS THE TAIL) OF THE AIRPLANE. THIS SIT ALSO ALTERS THE ANGLE OF ATTACK OF THE WING AND PROBABLY CAUSED THE ACFT TO LIFT OFF IN GND EFFECT TOO EARLY. THIS HYPOTHESIS IS SUPPORTED BY THE FACT THAT I HAD NOT EXPERIENCED ANY PROB DURING SEVERAL HRS OF DUAL CHKOUT INCLUDING MULTIPLE LNDGS WHEN THE ACFT WAS HEAVIER AND THEREFORE MORE RESISTANT TO GETTING OFF THE GND. I AM NOT CURRENTLY AWARE OF ANY VIOLATION THAT I MAY HAVE MADE ALTHOUGH I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE PROTECTION AFFORDED BY THIS PROCESS AS NECESSARY.
