NMAC OF AN SMA SEL TRAINING ACFT RETURNING TO LAND; DUE ROUGH RUNNING ENG; AND AN MLT ON A GAR AFTER APCH TO WRONG PARALLEL RWY OVER THE ENDS OF THE INTERSECTING PARALLEL RWYS.

Narrative

STUDENT AND I RECEIVED CLRNC FOR IFR FLT FOR STUDENT INSTRUCTION ON MULTIPLE INST APCHS (NDB). RECEIVED TKOF CLRNC FOR RWY 26R (INTXN L TKOF) WITH A TURN TO 220 DEGS. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF THE SMA SEL EXPERIENCED MISSING ENG SOUNDS AND PERFORMANCE DECAYED. I IMMEDIATELY INFORMED HNL TWR I NEED TO LAND DUE TO ENG PROBS. THEY DIRECTED ME TO ENTER A L DOWNWIND PATTERN TO RWY 22L. I CONFIRMED THE DIRECTIONS AND RECONFIRMED BY SAYING MY PATTERN WOULD PLACE ME DIRECTLY OVER THE DEP END OF RWYS 22L/R. TWR AGAIN CLRED ME FOR A L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 22L AND TO OVERFLY THE DEP ENDS OF RWY 2L/R. WHEN ESTABLISHED AT THE 800 FT TFC PATTERN ALT NEAR THE DEP END OF RWY 22R; AN MLT PASSED SLIGHTLY BEHIND AND BELOW OUR ACFT. I ESTIMATE 200 FT VERT AND 300 FT HORIZ SEPARATION AND THE ACFT (MLT) COMING TOWARDS US OFF OUR L WING (SLIGHTLY IN TRAIL). I WAS CLRED TO LAND AND MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. I CALLED THE HNL TWR SUPVR AFTERWARDS AND THANKED HIM BUT EXPRESSED CONCERN WITH THE CLOSENESS OF THE MLT MIL ACFT. I WAS INFORMED THE MLT WAS ON AN LDA APCH WITH CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 26L BUT GOT CONFUSED AND WAS APCHING RWY 26R. THE TWR DIRECTED HIM TO GAR WHICH PUT HIM NEAR OUR FLT PATH.
