Narrative

IT WAS A VERY BUSY SUNNY AFTERNOON. GND SAID: 'SMA; SHORT RWY 22.' I TAXIED ON THE RAMP ALONGSIDE TXWY PAPA MISTAKE. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PAPA. AT NOVEMBER I TURNED R; THINKING RWY 27. MISTAKE. I SHOULD HAVE WRITTEN RWY 22 ON MY PAGE. GND SAID: 'TURN 180 AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22.' I TURNED IMMEDIATELY AND RESPONDING: 'SMA TURNING 180 SHORT 22...THANK YOU.' BECAUSE OF THE TURN; NOW FACING THE BRIGHT SUN; THE AMMETER POINTER WENT DOWN TO MINUS AND I WAS 100 PERCENT DISAPPOINTED OF MY STUPIDITY. I CONFUSED TXWY PAPA AS THE RAMP AND RWY 22 AS PAPA. I AM USED TO TETERBORO WIDE RWYS. I CROSSED THE LINE AND WHEN I REALIZED IT; I WAS ON THE MIDDLE OF THE RWY. GND SAID: 'TURN 180 NOW.' I GAVE FULL PWR AND TURNED SHARP. THAT'S WHEN THE R WING OUT OF THE WAY GAVE ME A VIEW OF A TWIN COMING REALLY CLOSE. IT WAS 100 PERCENT MY FAULT. IN THE LAST 5 MONTHS SINCE I TOOK MY PVT; I HAVE FLOWN TO DOZENS OF ARPTS; CLASS B TO SMALL UNCTLED FIELDS. I WAS TOO IMPULSIVE -- BEING QUICK AND DOING IT LIKE A YOUNG WISE KID. I WILL BE 60 NEXT YR AND STARTED MY FIRST LESSON DEC/91 AND SOLOED OCT/92. AVIATION WAS THE DREAM OF MY LIFE. INVULNERABLE AND MACHO. I IMPRESSED THE EXAMINER DOING GREAT 720; GREASYING LNDGS; PERFECT EMERS AND VERY GOOD PILOTAGE. I HAD SOME EMERS AND I CAME UP ON THE TOP LIKE A PRO. GREAT XCOUNTRY; HIGH WIND; NO PROB. I COULD SPOT SOMEONE'S MISTAKE MILES AWAY. I WAS TOO GOOD FOR MY HRS. EVERYTHING WAS JUST RIGHT. NO TIME TO THINK. SHOW OFF (WIFE; CHILDREN; FRIENDS; ETC). I WAS TOO HAPPY BECAUSE I COULD BELIEVE I WAS FLYING. UNTIL 'HELL BROKE LOOSE' ON THIS FLT. MY PRIDE WENT ON A GRAVE YARD SPIRAL. WELL; I WENT UP ON THE PATTERN AND LANDED LIKE A JACK ASS. WHEN GND SAID CALL TWR; I DID. I WAS GOING TO WARWICK (N72) TO GET 3 HRS WITH MRS. X (CFII) AN OLDER TIMER TO TEACH ME SAFETY UNDER THE HOOD; SMALL FIELD LNDGS; EMERS; ETC. AT NIGHT I CALLED MRS. X AND SHE REPLIED THAT NOBODY IS DEAD AND FROM NOW ON SHE BELIEVES ON HER 50 YRS OF AVIATION THAT I AM GOING TO BE A REALLY SAFER PLT. I BELIEVE THE HUMAN PERFORMANCE IN MY CASE WAS OVER CONFIDENCE. BUT 1 INCIDENT MAKES REALISM TO DREAMERS THAT AVIATION IS BEAUTIFUL; CHALLENGING AND IF WE ALL STICK TO ITS RULES WE CAN MAKE IT MUCH SAFER.
