MLG HAS LTSS FROM FGT. TCASII RA.
Narrative
WHILE AT CRUISE AT FL220 (J-52 WBOUND); THE TCASII SUDDENLY ANNOUNCED A TA OF AN FGT THAT WAS CLBING SE OF THE COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING OF THE TFC BEFORE THE TA (TCASII WAS IN THE NORMAL MODE SHOWING TFC ONLY WITHIN 2700 FT ABOVE AND BELOW). WITHIN A FEW SECONDS OF THE TA; TCASII WENT TO AN RA MODE COMMANDING A CLB OF AT LEAST 3000 FPM. I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT; DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND INITIATED A RAPID CLB. TFC WAS NOTED ON TCASII TO BE IN OUR R FORWARD QUADRANT AND AT MINUS 600 FT BELOW OUR ACFT. AN ABRUPT L TURN WAS THEN INITIATED DURING THE CLB. AT ABOUT FL233; THE RA CEASED; AND THE ACFT WAS LEVELED OFF. APCH WAS NOTIFIED OF OUR DEV FROM ASSIGNED ALT AND OF THE TCASII EVENT. THE ACFT WAS THEN RETURNED TO FL220 ON THE AIRWAY WBOUND. THE INTRUDER ACFT WAS NEVER SIGHTED VISUALLY BUT CAME WITHIN 600 FT VERTICALLY AND ABOUT 2 MI HORIZLY. I QUESTIONED COLUMBUS APCH; AND WAS TOLD IT WAS AN FLT CLBING ON AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE. AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS THE TCASII EVENT OCCURRED; THE CTLR WAS ASKING AN ACFT WITH A MIL SOUNDING CALL SIGN TO VERIFY HIS ALT. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT WAS THE INTRUDER ACFT OR NOT.
