Synopsis

FLC OF AN MLG ACR ACFT ABORTED TKOF AS REQUESTED BY THE TWR DUE TO ANOTHER LNDG ACFT HAD NOT YET CLRED THE RWY.

Narrative

AN ACR MLG Y JET HAD JUST LANDED. AN ACR MLG Z WAS ON FINAL APCH. WE WERE THE #1 ACFT FOR DEP; HOLDING SHORT FOR RWY 28L. IT WAS THE CAPT'S TKOF AS BRIEFED. WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF BY THE TWR. I ROLLED ONTO THE RWY AND ALIGNED MYSELF WITH THE CTRLINE; I ESTIMATE AT 20 KTS. THE SPD WAS SLOW SINCE THE RWY WAS WET. TKOF PWR WAS NOT YET ADVANCED SINCE AS I LOOKED DOWN THE CTRLINE I COULD SEE THE LNDG JET HAD NOT YET CLRED THE RWY. WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD LINE; ROLLED 150 FT; WHEN THE TWR CALLED FOR US TO ABORT OUR TKOF. THIS WAS DONE EASILY SINCE OUR SPD WAS SO SLOW AND CLRED THE RWY TO OUR IMMEDIATE R SINCE I KNEW THE OTHER ACFT WAS PERHAPS A FEW MI OUT FOR LNDG. SINCE THE LANDED JET HAD NOT CLRED THE RWY AS FAST AS TWR EXPECTED; THEY FOUND IT NECESSARY TO CALL FOR THE ABORT. TWR PERHAPS MISJUDGED THE TIME FOR THE JET TO CLR THE RWY; OUR FLT TO TKOF AND THE ACFT ON APCH TO LAND IN WHAT SEEMED TO BE TOO MUCH OF A TIME COMPRESSION. PERHAPS WITH THE WET RWY THE LANDED JET COULD NOT STOP AS FAST AS TWR EXPECTED. I WOULD NOT HAVE CONTINUED THE TKOF ROLL SINCE IT APPEARED TO ME THAT EVENTS DID NOT SEEM TO PROGRESS AS EXPECTED. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT AIR CREWS AND ATC SHOULD ALWAYS MAINTAIN VIGILANCE AND NEVER BECOME COMPLACENT SO THEY CAN RESPOND ACCORDINGLY.
