ENG FIRE WARNING SHORTLY AFTER TKOF FORCES MLG TO RETURN LAND.

Narrative

SHORTLY AFTER BECOMING AIRBORNE OFF RWY 5L AT CLE; APPROX 100 FT AGL; WE OBSERVED A 'FIRE WARNING L ENG.' WE REDUCED THE L THROTTLE TO IDLE AFTER PASSING 400 FT AGL. THE FIRE WARNING CEASED AND THE CAPT TESTED THE FIRE WARNING SYS TO ENSURE ITS VALIDITY. WE THEN REQUESTED AND RECEIVED PERMISSION TO ENTER A DOWNWIND LEG AND DSND BACK TO VMC CONDITIONS. WE ACCOMPLISHED A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 5R AT CLE WITH THE L ENG AT IDLE PWR. AFTER CLRING THE RWY; WE SHUT DOWN THE L ENG; STARTED THE APU; AND THEN SHUT DOWN THE R ENG. WE THEN HAD OUR RAMP PERSONNEL TOW US TO THE GATE; SINCE THE CLEVELAND FIRE DEPT PERSONNEL HAD INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS NO EXTERNAL EVIDENCE OF ANY FIRE OR SMOKE. CLEVELAND ATC DID AN EXCELLENT JOB OF EXPEDITING OUR RETURN TO THE ARPT. TOTAL AIRBORNE TIME WAS 7 MINS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 259404: DECLARED EMER; CONTACTED DEP; TURNED DOWNWIND; REDUCED THRUST L ENG TO IDLE. FIRE WARNING CEASED. BLEED AIR LEAK APPARENT PROB. FO WAS FLYING. HE CONTINUED FLYING. AFTER CLRING ON 2ND HIGH SPD; PULLED FIRE HANDLE; GOT VISUAL CONFIRMATION OF CLEAN ENG (NO SMOKE/FIRE) FROM FIRE CHIEF. DEP CTLR REMAINED WITH US THROUGHOUT -- PERFECT VECTORS; ARPT LOCATION ADVISORIES; AND ALT ASSIGNMENTS. ALL REQUESTS BY CREW WERE IMMEDIATELY ANSWERED OR PROVIDED. PROCEDURALLY WE WERE VERY BUSY; BUT FINISHED IMPORTANT CHKLISTS CORRECTLY.
