Narrative
DURING ENG START; ENG EXCEEDED EGT START LIMITS. AFTER CONSULTING THE B-727 FLT HANDBOOK FOR GUIDANCE AND OUR FLT OPS POLICY MANUAL; IT WAS DETERMINED THERE WAS NOTHING TO PRECLUDE OUR TRYING A SECOND START ATTEMPT. SECOND START WAS SUCCESSFUL; WITH START PARAMETERS WELL WITHIN LIMITS. ACFT WAS THEN FLOWN TO STL WITH ALL ENG INSTS WELL WITHIN NORMAL OPERATING LIMITS. A LOGBOOK ENTRY WAS MADE; REGARDING THE OVERTEMP DURING START OF THE #1 ENG. THE INTENT OF THIS LOGBOOK ENTRY WAS TO NOTIFY MAINT SO THEY COULD PERFORM THEIR REQUIRED CHK ON THE ENG. OUR FLT HANDBOOK FOR THIS ACFT DOES NOT STATE THIS SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT BE A GNDING ITEM OR GUIDANCE RELATING TO THIS SIT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 262598: #2 ENG STARTED FIRST DUE TO FROZEN START VALVE (NORMAL START). #1 ENG SLOW TO ROTATE; THEN WHEN START LEVER WAS RAISED; THE JT8D-15A STABILIZED AT 520 DEGS C. THE TEMP (EGT) THEN SHOT UP TO 660 DEGS C APPROX. ALL HANDBOOK PROCS WERE COMPLIED WITH AND ENG WAS RESTARTED LATER WITH NO ABNORMAL INDICATIONS AT ALL. FLT CONTINUED TO STL. WE REQUESTED THAT MAINTENANCE VISUALLY INSPECT ENG. THEIR HANDBOOK TOLD THEM TO REMOVE ENG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 262940: UPON ARR TO ACFT WAS ADVISED BY MAINT THAT PREVIOUS ACFT LAYING OVER IN THESE CONDITIONS COULD NOT START ENGS DUE TO START VALVES BEING FROZEN AND SUGGESTED TO US TO MOTOR THE STARTERS. WE COMPLETED THE PREFLT AND ACCOMPLISHED THE BEFORE STARTING ENG CHKLIST. THEN WE MOTORED #1 STARTER; NORMAL ROTATION. THEN WE MOTORED #2 STARTER. NORMAL ROTATION. THEN WE MOTORED #2 STARTER NO ROTATION. THEN WE MOTORED #3 STARTER NORMAL ROTATION. WE THEN CALLED MAINT AND ACCOMPLISHED A MANUAL OPENING OF THE #2 STARTER VALVE. THE INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL AND ACCOMPLISHED A NORMAL START; HOWEVER; WE NOTED A FILTER BYPASS ANNUNCIATOR ILLUMINATED. THEN WE MOTORED #1 STARTER; ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL; RAISED THE START LEVER. ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL UNTIL EGT ROSE PAST START LIMIT; FOLLOWED COMPANY PROCS; MOTORED STARTER FOR COOLING AND ACCOMPLISHED NORMAL #1 START.
