KING AIR 200 EXPERIENCES AN ENG SEIZURE WHILE IN CRUISE AND GOES INTO AUTO FEATHER MODE.

Narrative

CRUISING AT FL240 THE L ENG ON THE KING AIR 200 MADE A SCREECHING WHINE; FLAMES WERE SEEN OUT OF THE EXHAUST AND THE PROPS STOPPED; FEATHERED. I CUT OFF THE FUEL AND CLOSED THE FIRE WALL SHUTOFF VALVE FOR THE L SIDE. ONCE THE REST OF THE SHUTDOWN PROCS WERE COMPLETED; MY COPLT ADVISED CTR THAT WE HAD LOST AN ENG. WE WERE VECTORED TO CHATTANOOGA; LOVELL FIELD; AND LANDED THERE WITHOUT INCIDENT. AN EMER WAS NOT DECLARED; BUT THE FIRE CREWS WERE THERE AT THEIR OWN DISCRETION. IT WAS NOT IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO THE ENG; EXCEPT THAT IT HAD CEASED. THE ENG WAS TAKEN APART AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT PARTS OF THE COMPRESSOR TURBINE HAD ENTERED THE PWR TURBINE; ALL THE VANES IN THE COMPRESSOR SECTION HAD RUBBED THE CASING AND #2 BEARING HAD COME APART. FEB/XX/94 A METALLURGICAL RPT ON THE COMPRESSOR TURBINE WHEEL SHOWED SIGNS OF OVERAGING; BUT NO CONCLUSIVE ANSWER AS TO WHY. THE NTSB 830.5(3) REQUESTS NOTIFICATION OF FAILURE OF A TURBINE ENG EXCEPT FOR COMPRESSOR AND TURBINE BLADES AND VANES AS IN OUR CASE; BUT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS ON FILE WITH YOU.
