Synopsis

NOSE GEAR COLLAPSES ON A PA-34 AS TRAINEE PLT RAISES GEAR HANDLE ON LNDG PROC ROLLOUT.

Narrative

WHILE RETURNING FROM A ROUTINE TRAINING EXERCISE ON MAR/94 AT XX50 HRS THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED ON LNDG WHEN THE TRAINEE PLACED THE GEAR OPERATING LEVER IN THE UP POS. THE TRAINEE PERFORMED THE LNDG CHKLIST ON DOWNWIND LEG; AND AFTER HE FINISHED; I PERFORMED THE LNDG CHKLIST AGAIN. ON FINAL APCH TO MORAINE AIRPARK I-73 RWY 26; I WENT THROUGH GEAR PROPS AND FUEL CHKS AGAIN; AT WHICH TIME I INFORMED THE TRAINEE THERE WAS A 12 KT XWIND FROM 220 DEGS TO RWY 26. WITH FULL FLAPS; THE LNDG WAS COMPETED WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF BOUNCE AND THE ACFT SETTLED ONTO THE RWY TAIL LOW. THE ACFT WAS SLOWING DOWN WHEN THE TRAINEE'S R HAND LEFT THE THROTTLES AND IMMEDIATELY PLACED THE GEAR OPERATING LEVER IN THE UP POS. THERE WAS NO TIME FOR ME TO REACT TO PREVENT THIS ACTION. THERE WERE NO PRIOR VISUAL INDICATORS FROM THE TRAINEE TO ALERT ME OF SUCH POSSIBLE ACTION. THE TRAINEE HAS A TOTAL TIME IN THE ACFT OF 71.1 HRS; OF WHICH 20 WERE DEDICATED TO ACTUAL MULTI-ENG TRAINING. THE REMAINDER OF THE TIME IS XCOUNTRY TRIPS WHERE HE ACTED AS SOLE MANIPULATOR OF THE CTLS WITH ME AS PIC. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: COCKPIT PROCS HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED AND NEW ONES HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED. DURING THE LNDG AND ROLLOUT THE TRAINEE'S R HAND WILL REMAIN ON THE THROTTLES WITH MY L HAND ON TOP UNTIL THE ACFT IS SLOWED TO A SAFE TAXI SPD; AT WHICH TIME I WILL CALL OUT FURTHER PROCS FOR HIM TO PERFORM FROM THE CHKLIST.
