Synopsis

SPI ON FIRST SOLO HAS LOSS OF ACFT CTL AND EXITS RWY.

Narrative

FIRST SUPERVISED STUDENT SOLO. ON THE STUDENT'S SECOND SOLO APCH; THE STUDENT MADE A SLIGHTLY HIGH FINAL APCH. OVER THE RWY AND IN LNDG CONFIGN THE ACFT STALLED AND BOUNCED. THE STUDENT ATTEMPTED RECOVERY. WHILE RECOVERING; HIS FOOT SLIPPED OFF OF THE R RUDDER APPLYING FULL L RUDDER. UPON RUDDER APPLICATION THE ACFT LEFT THE RWY AND ROLLED INTO THE MEDIAN SEPARATING THE RWY AND TXWY. AS THE ACFT ROLLED INTO THE DITCH; THE NOSEWHEEL SHEARED AND THE PROP STRUCK THE TURF. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: POOR LNDG; IMPROPER RECOVERY TECHNIQUE. ACCIDENT WAS WITNESSED BY FLT INSTRUCTOR ON FIRST SUPERVISED SOLO. STUDENT'S PERFORMANCE WAS AFFECTED WHEN FOOT SLIPPED FROM RUDDER AND ACFT ENTERED GRASSY AREA. THE STUDENT WILL BE GIVEN A MINIMUM OF 5 ADDITIONAL HRS OF FLT INSTRUCTION IN BAD LNDG RECOVERY BEFORE NEXT SUPERVISED SOLO. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 271196: THIS WAS MY FIRST SUPERVISED SOLO. I FEEL VERY CONFIDENT LNDG THE ACFT BUT MY PERFORMANCE WAS AFFECTED WHEN MY FOOT SLIPPED FROM THE R RUDDER AND THE ACFT LEFT THE RWY. IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PRUDENT TO TRY AND PULL ACFT BACK ON THE RWY CONSIDERING MY ANGLE INTO THE GRASS. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: ADDITIONAL PRE-SOLO TRAINING; RECOVERY FROM BAD LNDGS; BALKED LNDGS FROM WITHIN THE LNDG CONFIGN.
