UNAUTH RWY ENTRY.
Narrative
I AM A CFI AND WAS ON AN INSTR TRAINING FLT WITH A STUDENT. WE HAD FLOWN INTO WHEELING AND WAS TAXIING OUT FOR DEP. WE CALLED GND FOR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AND WAS GIVEN THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: 'TAXI RWY 34 VIA RWY 21.' WE PROCEEDED TO TAXI DOWN RWY 21 AND THEN TURNED L TO TAXI TO THE END OF 34. THERE ARE NO TXWYS FOR RWY 34. (SEE DIAGRAM). AS WE TURNED L ONTO RWY 34 WE WERE TOLD BY THE CTLR THAT WE HAD JUST IMPROPERLY TAXIED ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY; AND THAT THERE WERE HOLD LINES ON RWY 21; WHICH WE HAD NOT SEEN. THE CTLR THEN TOLD US TO CONTINUE TO TAXI TO THE END OF RWY 34. THERE WAS; OF COURSE; NO IMPROPRIETY ON THE PART OF THE CTLR; AS TAXI CLRNC IS NOT AUTHORIZATION TO TAXI ONTO OR CROSS THE ASSIGNED RWY. THEREFORE; I HAD TO EXAMINE MY ACTIONS TO ATTEMPT TO DETERMINE HOW I COULD HAVE MADE SUCH A SERIOUS MISTAKE; AND I BELIEVE THE FACTORS LEADING TO THIS ARE AS FOLLOWS: FIRST OF ALL I DID NOT SEE THE HOLD LINES BECAUSE I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO SEE THEM; HAVING NEVER SEEN HOLD LINES ON A RWY BEFORE. ALSO; BEING USED TO USING ARPTS WITH TXWYS; WHEN GIVEN TAXI INSTRUCTIONS I AM IN THE HABIT OF TAXIING TO THE END OF THE RWY; VIA THE TXWY; AND THERE PREPARING FOR TKOF. NOT BEING USED TO HOLDING SHORT OF THE RWY; AT THE CTR OF THE RWY; I WAS NATURALLY INCLINED TO PROCEED TOWARD THE END OF THE RWY. THIS WAS A MISJUDGEMENT ON MY PART. SINCE THIS HAPPENED I HAVE PROVIDED THIS SCENARIO TO SEVERAL OTHER PLTS; WHO HAVE ALL TOLD ME THEY ALSO WOULD HAVE TAXIED ONTO THE RWY IF GIVEN A SIMILAR CLRNC. THEY HAVE ALL BEEN SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT THEY WOULD BE IMPROPERLY ENCROACHING ON AN ACTIVE RWY. THIS INCIDENT HAS CERTAINLY BEEN AN EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE FOR ME; AND I WILL CERTAINLY BRIEF MY STUDENTS ON THIS SIT IN THE FUTURE. I BELIEVE THIS MISTAKE COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN MADE BY ANY PLT; AT THIS OR A SIMILAR ARPT; THAT THE PLT IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH; AND I BELIEVE THAT REQUIRING A HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION; FROM THE CTLR; WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA.
