MD 81 EXPERIENCES R SIDE HYD FAILURE ON APCH. USE EMER GEAR EXTENSION.
Narrative
DURING A VISUAL APCH TO WASHINGTON NATIONAL ARPT; WE EXPERIENCED A TOTAL FAILURE OF THE R HYD SYS UPON LNDG GEAR EXTENSION FOR LNDG. GEAR HAD TO BE MANUALLY EXTENDED UTILIZING THE EMER GEAR EXTENSION HANDLE AND PROCS AT APPROX 2000 AGL; WHILE ON FINAL APCH. AFTER APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED; WE ADVISED DCA TWR THAT OUR GEAR DOORS MAY NOT BE CLOSED AND COULD VERY POSSIBLY BE HANGING OPEN (DOWN) DUE TO A HYD PROB; AND THAT WE MAY HAVE TO STOP ON THE RWY. TWR ADVISED US AT APPROX 500 FT THAT THE DOORS WERE INDEED OPEN. AT THIS POINT; ALL INDICATIONS (EXCEPT THE DOORS) WERE NORMAL; SO WE CONTINUED ON TO A NORMAL LNDG AND PROCEEDED TO EXIT RWY 36 ONTO RWY 33 AND THEN ONTO TXWY 'N' WITH THE DOORS DRAGGING ON THEIR BUILT-IN SKIDPADS. WE THEN ADVISED TWR THAT WE WOULD PREFER TO HAVE OUR COMPANY TOW US TO THE GATE AND PROCEEDED TO STOP AND SHUTDOWN THE ACFT AND WAIT FOR OUR COMPANY TUG AND TOWBAR. TWR SAID THAT THEY NOTICED SOME SMOKE FROM THE GEAR AREA AND CALLED THE EMER EQUIP AS A PRECAUTION. RWY WAS SHUTDOWN FOR APPROX 10 MINS FOR A FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE CHK. ACFT WAS THEN TOWED UNEVENTFULLY TO THE GATE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 273290: THE NOSE GEAR WOULD NOT EXTEND. HAD TO PULL THE EMER HANDLE AND THE GEAR CAME DOWN AND LOCKED (3 GREEN ). WE PULLED OFF RWY AND STOPPED. MAINT CLOSED GEAR DOORS AND TOWED US TO GATE. WE DIDN'T DECLARE EMER BUT SHOULD HAVE.
