RWY EXCURSION AFTER LOSS OF ACFT CTL DURING LNDG PROC ROLLOUT.
Narrative
STUDENT FLYING ACFT ON FINAL FOR RWY 4 CALDWELL! ACFT WAS ON SHORT FINAL TO LAND RWY 4; AIRSPD 60 KIAS AS RECOMMENDED BY PLT'S OPERATING HANDBOOK. DSCNT RATE ESTABLISHED FOR A TOUCHDOWN ON THE THRESHOLD. ACFT MADE TOUCHDOWN IN A NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE; LNDG ON THE MAIN GEAR. THE NOSE GEAR TOUCHED DOWN AND WENT THROUGH ITS NORMAL TRAVEL; PUTTING THE ACFT IN A NOSE LOW POS; THE PROP DID NOT TOUCH THE RWY. UPON NOSE GEAR TOUCHDOWN; THE ACFT BOUNCED SLIGHTLY. AT THIS POINT; I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT; PREPARING FOR A GAR; BRINGING IN THE PWR; RETRACTING THE FIRST NOTCH OF FLAPS WE CLBED 6-7 FT ABOVE THE RWY; WHEN I REALIZED THERE WAS NO RUDDER CTL. SIMULTANEOUSLY; THE CTL TWR ADVISED ME OF SMOKE COMING OUT FROM THE GEAR. AT THIS POINT; I DECIDED TO LAND THE ACFT ON THE REMAINING RWY; REDUCING THE PWR; USING FULL FLAPS I LANDED THE ACFT ON THE CTRLINE. THE ACFT IMMEDIATELY STARTED PULLING TO THE R. I APPLIED RUDDER; HOWEVER; WITHOUT SUCCESS. THE ACFT WENT OFF THE TXWY; ACROSS THE GRASS AND CAME TO REST ON THE ADJACENT TXWY; WHERE WE IMMEDIATELY SHUTOFF THE ENG AND ADVISED THE TWR OF OUR ACTION. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF HYD LEAKAGE ON THE PREFLT.
