Narrative
THE TRAINEE IN THE L SEAT (SIC) AND MYSELF IN THE R SEAT (PIC) DEPARTED CRQ IN VFR CONDITIONS TO MYF. AFTER DEP THE TRAINEE CONTACTED SAN APCH ON 127.3 FOR A CLASS 'B' CLRNC TO MYF. THE CTLR ASKED IF 1500 FT WAS DESIRED AS A FINAL. WE AGREED. THE CTLR THEN CLRED US THROUGH CLASS B AIRSPACE AT 1500 FT DIRECT MOUNT SOLEDAD; DIRECT MYF. I THEN INSTRUCTED THE TRAINEE TO REQUEST THE 80S FREEWAY TRANSITION THROUGH MIRAMAR'S AIRSPACE AS A MEANS OF EXPEDITING OUR FLT. HE DID AND THE CTLR SAID STANDBY. UPON THE CTLR'S RETURN TO US SHE STATED MAINTAIN 1400 FT TO REMAIN CLR OF CLASS B AIRSPACE; SQUAWK VFR AND CONTACT MIRAMAR TWR FOR A CLASS D TRANSITION. WE THEN CONTACTED MIRAMAR TWR AND THE TWR CTLR SAID TO PROCEED THROUGH THE CLASS D AIRSPACE. AS WE CONTINUED TO CLOSE IN ON MYF'S AIRSPACE; IT BECAME APPARENT THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO ASK THE CTLR FOR A FREQ CHANGE. WE DID AND MIRAMAR TWR SAID FREQ CHANGE APPROVED. OUR FIRST CALL TO MYF TWR WAS BLOCKED; AND BY THIS TIME; WE WERE IN MYF'S CLASS 'D.' MY ASSUMPTION WAS THAT MIRAMAR HAD COORDINATED OUR ARR WITH MYF AND THAT WE WERE EXPECTED BY THE MYF TWR. AT THIS TIME; OUR AIRPLANE IS AT PATTERN ALT AND ON A L XWIND ENTRY FOR RWY 28L. AFTER OUR BLOCKED XMISSION TO MYF TWR; THE TRAINEE XMITTED AGAIN AND MYF TWR RESPONSE WAS 'TFC IN YOUR IMMEDIATE VICINITY.' THE TRAINEE SAW THE OTHER ACFT (CHEROKEE) WITH NO TIME TO REACT. HE SAID THE ACFT WAS WITHIN 50 FT. I NEVER SAW THE OTHER AIRPLANE FROM THE R SEAT. THE TWR'S NEXT CALL WAS ENTER L DOWNWIND FOR RWY 28L; CLR TO LAND. IT IS MY OPINION THAT MIRAMAR AND MYF TWRS SHOULD HAVE BETTER COORDINATED OUR ARR. ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT AN 80S FREEWAY TRANSITION S THROUGH MIRAMAR'S AIRSPACE WILL PUT YOU IN MYF'S AIRSPACE UPON EXITING US TO COORDINATE WITH MYF IF MIRAMAR TWR HAD FAILED TO DO SO. IF I CHOOSE TO ASK FOR THIS SVC IN THE FUTURE (UNLIKELY) I WILL MAKE SURE THE TRAINEE'S OR MY OWN INITIAL CALL INCLUDES 'TRANSITION S ALONG 80S FREEWAY ENRTE TO MYF'; AND MAKE SURE SOMEONE COORDINATED THE ARR WITH MYF -- EITHER THE MIRAMAR CTLR ON A LANDLINE OR ME VIA AN EARLY FREQ CHANGE.
