ACFT EVACED AFTER A RETURN LAND.

Narrative

A FEW SECONDS AFTER TKOF AND GEAR RETRACTION; A MODERATE BOOM AND SHAKING OF THE ACFT WAS HEARD AND FELT BY ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS. I IMMEDIATELY SAW THE OUERTEMP LIGHT ON #2 ENG AND THEN SAW LIGHT GO OUT AS CAPT PULLED THROTTLE TO IDLE. I CHKED ELECTRICAL AND HYD PANEL (OK) AND THEN RETURNED ATTN TO FORWARD PANEL; WATCHING ENG INSTS AND CAPT'S EFFORTS TO GAIN ALT AND AIRSPD. ALL GOING WELL AS TWR WAS TOLD OF DESIRE TO CIRCLE AND RETURN TO LAND ON SAME RWY. THE ENG CONTINUED TO RUN AT IDLE WITH NORMAL INDICATIONS AND THERE WAS NEVER A FIRE WARNING IN COCKPIT. ON DOWNWIND LEG; FO NOTICED EGT BEGIN TO RISE RAPIDLY AGAIN SO ENG WAS SHUT DOWN AND APPROPRIATE CHKLIST READ. 2 ENG APCH AND LNDG CHKLIST WAS ALSO READ AND A VISUAL APCH AND LNDG WAS MADE WITH NO FURTHER PROB. TOUCHDOWN AND BRAKING WERE LIGHT; REVERSING (1 AND 3) NORMAL AND TURNOFF MADE A HIGHSPD ABOUT 2/3 WAY DOWN RWY AND ACFT STOPPED WELL CLR OF RWY. CAPT ASKED FOR FIRE CREW TO INSPECT #2 ENG. THEY RPTED SMALL FLAME IN TAILCONE WHICH THEY SNUFFED AND FO FIRED ONE BOTTLE. CAPT INTENDED TO RESUME TAXIING TO GATE TO DEPLANE PAX WHEN A MEMBER OF FIRE CREW SAID THERE WERE FLAMES AROUND L-HAND MAIN GEAR AND PAX SHOULD EVAC. ONE BRAKE UNIT WAS NEW AND PLT CREW NOT SURPRISED AT SOME SMOKE; BUT DOUBTED FIRE RPT. HOWEVER; THE RPT WAS REPEATED; SO CAPT ORDERED EVAC. 285 PEOPLE WENT OUT 7 EXITS IN 2 MINS OR LESS.. THE 8 FLT ATTENDANTS DID GOOD JOB INCLUDING BLOCKING USE OF 3R (DC- 10-10) WHERE WIND HAD TWISTED THE LONG DOUBLE-LENGTH OVERWING SLIDE. FO AND SO CHKED THE CABIN; CAPT REMAINED ON RADIO; RECEIVED WORD ALL WAS SECURE AND CREW REMAINED ABOARD AND RODE TOW BACK TO TERMINAL GATE WHILE ASSESSING AND DISCUSSING EVENT. 4 PAX RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. INSPECTION OF PLANE SHOWED SEIZED N1 IN #2 ENG AND NO OIL. NO DAMAGE OR FIRE SIGNS FOUND AT L-HAND MAIN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 275381: I QUERIED HIM ON THE 'FLAMES.' HE REPEATED WHAT HE HAD TOLD US -- I HAD NO ALTERNATIVE BUT TO INITIATE THE EVAC. I SUSPECT RESIDUAL HEAT FROM OUR TKOF ROLL AND SHORT AIRBORNE TIME TO BE THE REASON FOR THE WHEEL WELL PROB. I USED WHAT I CONSIDER; 'LIGHT BRAKING' ON OUR ROLLOUT.
