Synopsis

PLT LOST CTL OF AN SMA SINGLE ENG LAND IN GUST OF WIND DURING TAXI CAUSING THE ACFT TO NOSE-UP AND STRIKE THE PROP.

Narrative

AFTER A 45 MIN PLEASURE FLT WHICH INCLUDED 6 TKOFS AND LNDGS (4 AT AZO) A RETURN FLT TO BTL ARPT WAS MADE. AFTER COMPLETION OF THE LNDG ROLLOUT ON RWY 05 AT BTL; THE ACFT EXPERIENCED A GUST OF WIND FROM THE NE AT APPROX 14 KTS. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THIS WIND CAUSED THE ACFT TO YAW L; AND PICKING UP THE TAIL TO THE EXTENT THAT THE PROP STRUCK THE GND; DAMAGING THE WOODEN PROP. IT IS BELIEVED; THAT THE GUST OF WIND WAS NOT IN ITSELF ENOUGH TO CAUSE THIS OCCURRENCE. BUT; GIVEN THE FACT THAT A BUILDING HAS BEEN RECENTLY CONSTRUCTED; WHICH MAY CAUSE WINDS OUT OF THE NE TO BECOME UNPREDICTABLE AND TURBULENT; THUS CAUSING A ROLLING EFFECT. THIS TURB IS ENOUGH TO CAUSE ONE TO LOSE CTL OF AN ACFT EVEN THOUGH XWIND PROCS WERE APPLIED ON THE GND. NO INJURIES RESULTED; VERY MINOR DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE ACFT OTHER THAN A DAMAGED PROP. IT SHOULD BE NOTED TOO THAT VERY LIGHT BRAKE PRESSURE WAS APPLIED DURING THE NOSE OVER FURTHER INVESTIGATION WILL BE MADE AS TO A HUNG BRAKE PROB. AT THE TIME OF THIS OCCURRENCE; THE ACFT WAS FIRMLY ON THE GND; LNDG WAS COMPLETE; AND THE ACFT WAS THEN IN THE TAXI MODE ON THE RWY 05. ACFT SPD WAS ESTIMATED AT BELOW 15 MPH -- MORE LIKELY 10 MPH AS THE AIRSPD INDICATOR WAS READING ZERO -- REGISTERED IN MPH.
