ACFT LANDS GEAR UP.

Narrative

I WAS IFR FROM DETROIT AREA; WILLOW RUN ARPT (YIP) TO OHIO; GALLIPOLIS ARPT. THE FLT WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN; MAJORITY OF THE TRIP WAS VFR; VFR ON TOP. NEAR THE DEST THE TRIP WAS IFR. DURING THE DSCNT; WE APPEARED TO BE ENTERING A RAIN CELL. I WAS CLRED FOR THE VOR-B APCH 10- 15 MI OUT. UPON REACHING 3500 FT WE WERE VFR IN RAIN SHOWERS. WHILE FLYING TO THE VOR. I SPOTTED THE ARPT AND TOLD HUNTINGTON APCH; 'I HAVE ARPT IN SIGHT;' HE THEN CLRED ME FOR A VISUAL APCH AND CONFIRMING; THAT WAS THE ARPT. I CANCELED MY IFR FLT ABOUT 5 MI OUT AND WENT TO UNICOM FREQ TO RPT MY POS; AND RECEIVE TFC INFO. WHILE WORKING ON CHKLIST ITEMS ON DOWNWIND; I HEARD A RADIO CALL AND STARTED LOOKING FOR TFC. WHILE ON FINAL THE CHKLIST WAS LOOKED AT FOR THE LAST TIME BUT SOME VERY IMPORTANT ITEMS WERE SKIPPED OVER; THE LNDG GEAR WASN'T SELECTED DOWN AND I DIDN'T CHK TO SEE IF THE GREEN LIGHT WAS ON. IT CAME TO MY ATTN AS PWR WAS REDUCED THE HORN WENT OFF AND THE PROPS WERE STRIKING THE GND MAKING NOISE; THAT I HAD MISSED THE GEAR DOWN SELECTION PART OF THE CHKLIST. THE ACFT SLID TO A SMOOTH STOP RIGHT ON THE CTRLINE OF THE RWY. IT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH A LONGER AND WIDER DOWNWIND AND DEFINITELY WITH A GAR. I BELIEVE THAT THE PROB AROSE BY NOT FLYING RETRACTABLE LNDG GEAR AIRPLANES ON A REGULAR BASIS. I HAVE APPROX 400 HRS OF RETRACT TIME ACCORDING TO THE 91 FAR'S. I'M CURRENT AND READY TO GO BUT I SEE THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I'LL ALWAYS BE SAFE. IF I EVER DECIDE TO USE A RETRACTABLE AIRPLANE; I'LL BE SURE TO HAVE A THOROUGH CHKOUT BY A CURRENT INSTRUCTOR.
