FLC OF AN MLG DECLARED AN EMER AFTER LOSING THE ACFT MAIN HYD SYS DURING FINAL APCH.

Narrative

UPON SELECTING FLAPS TO 5 FROM 1 WE LOST ALL A-SYS HYDS; OUR PRIMARY SYS. AS WE WERE ON FINAL APCH TO PHX; WE CONTINUED THE APCH WITH A DELAY VECTOR TO GIVE US ENOUGH TIME TO GET THROUGH THE CHKLIST. WE DECLARED AN EMER AND ASKED APCH TO HAVE THE FIRE TRUCKS AVAILABLE UPON LNDG. WE PROCEEDED TO THE ARPT AND MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG AND WERE ABLE TO TAXI OFF THE RWY (WITHOUT NOSEWHEEL STEERING) WE WERE TOWED TO THE GATE. MY 2 REASONS FOR WRITING THIS RPT ARE AS FOLLOWS: WE HAD A JUMPSEATER FROM OUR OWN AIRLINE AND ON E SAME EQUIP. HE IMMEDIATELY BECAME PART OF THE CREW. I GAVE HIM DUTIES (COMMUNICATING WITH THE CABIN; LOWER GEAR MANUALLY; ETC) JUST AS I WAS ASSIGNING TASKS TO THE FO. HE WAS A TREMENDOUS HELP AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE THE USE OF ANY CREW MEMBER AVAILABLE IN SITS LIKE THIS. USE OF THE CHKLIST IS DESIGNED TO BE SOMEWHAT INTERACTIVE. UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES IT BECAME CLR TO ME THAT 1 PERSON NEEDS TO RUN THE CHKLIST WHILE THE OTHER FLIES THE AIRPLANE TUNNEL VISION SETS IN AND IT IS HARD ENOUGH TO FLY AND DELEGATE RESPONSIBILITIES MUCH LESS TO CHK YOUR TEAMMATES ACTIONS. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE ABLE TO TRUST HIM TO DO THE JOB RIGHT AS HE HAS TO TRUST YOU TO 'FLY RIGHT.'
