MECHANIC PRESSURED BY AIRLINE VICE PRESIDENT TO INSTALL ILLEGAL PART.
Narrative
A DEHAVILAND DASH 8 MADE AN UNSCHEDULED LNDG IN SALISBURY; MD. THE ACFT HAD A HYD LOSS OF PRESSURE IN THE #2 SYS. AFTER THE LNDG THE EMER CREWS CHKED THE ACFT THEN WE WERE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE ACFT INTO MAINT HANGAR. AFTER INSPECTING THE HYD SYS I FOUND THE PRESSURE FITTING ON THE MAIN HYD PUMP WAS LOOSE. AFTER A CLOSER INSPECTION; I FOUND THE O-RING ON THE PRESSURE FITTING TO BE DETERIORATED TO THE POINT THAT IT FELL APART. WE DECIDED THAT THE PUMP NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. HOWEVER TO OUR KNOWLEDGE THERE WAS NOT ANOTHER PART AVAILABLE. THE VICE- PRESIDENT OF MAINT TOLD US TO JUST CHANGE THE O-RING. AFTER LOOKING UP THE CORRECT PART NUMBER (NAS 1602-) I TRIED TO ORDER ONE THROUGH THE STORES DEPT. BUT THE PART NUMBER IS NOT IN THE COMPUTER SYS. THE AIRLINES DOES NOT OWN THIS PART. THIS WAS TOLD TO THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF MAINT AND HE WANTED TO JUST FIND AN O-RING THAT WILL FIT. AT THIS POINT WE ENTERED THE STORES DEPT AND SAW A HYD PUMP SITTING ON THE 'NEEDS TO BE INSPECTED' SHELF. THE PUMP WAS INSPECTED AND WAS INSTALLED ON THE ACFT. THEN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ACFT MAINT MANUAL THE HYD FILTERS WERE INSPECTED AND CHANGED. THE HYD PUMP THAT WAS PLACED ON THE ACFT HAD THE PRESSURE AND OTHER FITTINGS ALREADY INSTALLED; SO THE PROB WITH THE LACK OF EQUIP (PARTS) NO LONGER EXISTED. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE AIRLINES DID NOT HAVE A HYD PUMP IN SALISBURY MD? I BELIEVE THAT I WOULD HAVE BEEN PRESSURED INTO PUTTING ON AN O-RING THAT WAS NOT THE CORRECT ONE; AND THEN I WOULD HAVE REFUSED TO SIGN OFF THE LOGBOOK. THIS MAY HAVE CAUSED MANY PROBS FOR ME AT WORK.
