INSTRUCTOR WITH SPI LANDED AT ARPT CLOSED TO TRANSIENT TFC WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION.
Narrative
TRANSITIONING UP THE COASTLINE OF CT; ME AND A STUDENT OF MINE/FRIEND SAW AND IDENTED A PUBLIC ARPT AS GRISWOLD MADISON ARPT ON OUR SECTIONAL (NEW YORK). WE SAW IT AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE A SHORT FIELD LNDG. LATER IN THE DAY I LOOKED IN THE ARPT FACILITIES DIRECTORY AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A 'LNDG FEE' AND THE ARPT IS 'CLOSED TO TRANSIENT ACFT WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION.' I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS A VIOLATION -- IT WAS UNINTENTIONAL -- WE ONLY DID ONE LNDG AND NO ONE ELSE WAS THERE. BETTER PLANNING COULD HAVE HELPED. WHY DON'T THEY CLASSIFY THESE AS 'PVT' ON THE SECTIONAL? CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES HE HAS HEARD NOTHING FROM THE ARPT OR FAA AND WOULD HOPE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY. WHEN HE AND HIS STUDENT LANDED THERE WERE PEOPLE AT THE ARPT WHO WAVED AND APPEARED TO BE SETTING UP FOR REMOTE CTL ACTIVITY. THERE ARE NOT TXWYS AT THIS ARPT AND THEY TURNED AND BACK-TAXIED ON THE RWY FOR DEP. THIS WAS AN IMPROMPTU LNDG USED FOR TRAINING PURPOSES AND RPTR HAD NOT CHKED THE AFD AHEAD OF THE FLT. HE STILL WONDERS WHY ARPT IS NOT MARKED AS 'PVT.' A CALLBACK WAS MADE TO THE NEAREST FSS AND THE ARPT SHOWED UP AS A PUBLIC USE ARPT ALONG WITH THE INFO THAT THE OWNER IS ALSO THE MGR. ANOTHER CALLBACK WAS MADE TO THE OWNER WHO WAS NOT A PLEASANT PERSON. HE STATED IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THE ARPT IS CLOSED TO TRANSIENT TFC. INDICATED IT SAYS SO IN THE AFD AND HAS FOR YRS. THERE WAS NO WAY TO GET MUCH FURTHER INFO FROM HIM AS HE WAS YELLING TOO MUCH. HE FINALLY STATED THAT THE ARPT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING SOLD AND WOULD THEN BE CLOSED. ALL OF THIS IS MUTE!
