BIRD STRIKE RESULTING IN ENG SHUTDOWN.
Narrative
WHILE ON A VISUAL APCH AT NIGHT TO RWY 32; WE WERE REASSIGNED A VISUAL TO RWY 28L AND THUS ENTERED A 3 MI L BASE FOR RWY 28L. WE WERE ALREADY FULLY CONFIGURED FOR LNDG WITH GEAR DOWN AND FULL (35 DEGS) FLAPS. WE WERE IN LEVEL FLT OR A SLIGHT DSCNT APPROX 2 MI OUT ON A L BASE FOR RWY 28L WHEN WE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THE ENG SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS GRINDING TO A STOP. I MAINTAINED CTL OF THE ACFT AND STATED THAT THE R ENG HAD FAILED. THE PNF CONFIRMED THAT AND PROCEEDED WITH AN ENG SHUTDOWN. I THEN NOTICED A SINK RATE DEVELOPING AND CALLED FOR 20 DEGS FLAPS. THE PNF RAISED THE FLAP LEVER AND THE FLAPS WENT TO 10 DEGS. I USED FULL PWR ON THE GOOD ENG AND WERE STILL SINKING. THE ACFT WAS ALSO VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN TO THE L; ALSO I WAS DISTRACTED BY THE ENG SHUTDOWN AND WE FLEW THROUGH FINAL FOR RWY 28L AND THEN CHOSE TO LAND ON RWY 28C. ON FINAL TO RWY 28 THE SINK RATE STOPPED AND WE REALIZED WE WOULD MAKE THE RWY EASILY. WE LANDED ON RWY 28C UNEVENTFULLY; CANCELED THE EMER AND TAXIED TO THE GATE.
