CAPT OF AN MDT OVERSHOT CLB ALT.
Narrative
CLBING OUT OF UNV ENRTE TO PHL WE WERE CLRED TO 7000 FT. THE FO CALLED OUT OF 6000 FT FOR 7000 FT; RADIOED OUR TIMES TO OPS AND BEGAN STOWING THE PAPERWORK. WE CONTINUED OUR CLB WITH BOTH OF US PREOCCUPIED. AS A CREW WE WOULD BE COMPLETING 49 HRS OF FLT TIME BY THE END OF THE DAY FOR HALF OF THE MONTH; SOMETHING THAT HAD BEEN GNAWING AT US DURING THE TRIP; WITH ANOTHER 14 HRS TO GO BEFORE A 2 DAY BREAK. THE FO WAS ADDITIONALLY PREOCCUPIED WITH HIS PAPERWORK. THE NEXT SOUND I HEARD WAS THE ALT ALERTER INDICATING WE HAD EXCEEDED OUR ASSIGNED ALT BY 200 FT. THE FO ALSO BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTN. I ROLLED THE PWR BACK AND PUSHED OVER AT 7400 FT AND BEGAN A DSCNT TO 7000 FT. ZNY REMINDED US THAT WE WERE CLRED TO 7000 FT AND THEN ACKNOWLEDGED US THAT WE WERE CLRED TO 7000 FT AND THEN ACKNOWLEDGED US LEVEL AT 7000 FT. AS TFC PASSED OVERHEAD AT 8000 FT AND 5 MI AWAY. THE CAUSE OF THE DEV WAS MY FAILURE TO LEVEL OFF AT THE ASSIGNED ALT DUE TO PREOCCUPATION WITH PURELY PERSONAL PROBS AND THE FO'S REQUIRED PAPERWORK.
