NO AIR GND COM WITH TWR DURING TOUCH AND GO LNDGS.
Narrative
I AM THE CHIEF FLT INSTRUCTOR AT THE AA CTR AND HAVE BEEN IN THIS POS FOR ONLY A WEEK WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED. I CURRENTLY HAVE 650 TOTAL HRS AND 21 HRS OF INSTRUCTION TIME. ON DEC/YY/94; AT APPROX AB30 HRS; MYSELF AND A STUDENT WERE PRACTICING TKOFS AND LNDGS AT AVL IN A CESSNA 172. WE HAD INITIALLY STARTED FLYING USING HEADSETS WITH THE RADIOS BEING MONITORED THROUGH THE HEADSETS. AFTER THE FIRST LNDG; MY STUDENT STATED THAT HE WOULD PREFER TO CONTINUE THE FLT WITHOUT THE USE OF THE HEADSETS AS HE FELT THEY WERE TOO CONSTRICTIVE AND HE DIDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE USING THEM. I SAID OKAY AND WE BOTH TOOK OUR HEADSETS OFF AND PUT THEM IN THE BACK SEAT. I FAILED AT THIS TIME TO INSURE THAT THE RADIOS WERE BEING MONITORED ON THE OVERHEAD SPEAKER IN THE COCKPIT. WE GOT INVOLVED IN THE LESSON DOING SEVERAL TOUCH AND GOES (APPROX 5) AND I FAILED TO NOTICE THAT WE HAD NOT HEARD FROM THE TWR DURING THIS TIME. WHEN I DID NOTICE THE SPEAKER BUTTON WAS NOT IN THE PROPER POS. I IMMEDIATELY PUSHED THE BUTTON AND MADE CONTACT WITH THE TWR. I STATED AT THAT TIME THAT I HAD FAILED TO INSURE THAT WE HAD APPROPRIATE COM WITH ATC DURING THE FLT. THEY TERMINATED THE FLT AND I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TELEPHONE THE TWR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WE TAXIED TO THE RAMP AND I TELEPHONED THE TWR FROM MY OFFICE AT THE AA CTR AND SPOKE WITH THE SUPVR OF THE TWR/APCH FOR THE AFTERNOON. HE MADE ME AWARE OF THE IMPACT OF MY ERROR. I RECOGNIZE THAT THE INCIDENT WAS MY OWN FAULT AS THE PIC OF THE ACFT.
