HIGH SPD ABORT ON TKOF.

Narrative

I WAS MAKING THE TKOF FROM RWY 5L MEX. BTWN VR AND V2 PRIOR TO LIFTOFF; BUT AFTER ROTATION (NOSE APPROX 10-12 DEGS ABOVE HORIZON); THERE WAS A LOUD BOOM AND THE ACFT VEERED L. I APPLIED RUDDER TO MAINTAIN CTRLINE EXPECTING TO TKOF. THE CAPT; WHOSE HAND WAS OFF THE THROTTLES AS PER PROC (WE HAD PASSED V1) MADE AN INSTANTANEOUS DECISION TO ABORT. I RETURNED THE NOSEWHEEL TO THE RWY SMOOTHLY AND APPLIED MAX BRAKING. AIRSPD WAS ABOUT 150- 155 KTS AT THE TIME BRAKING WAS INITIATED. I CALLED THE ABORT ON TWR FREQ AND AGAIN ON GND CTL CLRING THE RWY AT THE END. I IMMEDIATELY REQUESTED CFR EQUIP ANTICIPATING A BRAKE FIRE AND THEN MADE A PA TO THE PAX ADVISING THEM OF THE SIT. THERE WAS NO EVAC; THOUGH THE PAX WERE REMOVED PROMPTLY BY A MOBILE LOUNGE. CFR RESPONDED QUICKLY AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE IMMEDIATELY. NO DAMAGE RESULTED FROM THE FIRE ON THE WHEELS. 1 FUSE PLUG BLEW. THE CAPT ASKED THAT I NOT MENTION IN MY RPT THAT THE ACFT HAD PASSED V1 WHEN HE STARTED THE ABORT. I FELT AT THE TIME THAT THIS WAS A REASONABLE REQUEST. FURTHER REFLECTION LEADS ME TO BELIEVE I WAS IN ERROR NOT RPTING IT. A HIGH SPD ABORT IS EXTREMELY SERIOUS AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF THE ACFT OR LIVES.
