ACR LGT CREW FLEW RIGHT THROUGH A SID RESTR.
Narrative
CLRNC WAS POMONA 6 DEP; MAINTAIN 14000 FT. WE BOTH HEARD IT; AND PUT 14000 FT IN THE ALT ALERTER. AS IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL VFR MORNING; I BRIEFED THE HAND FLOWN TKOF; CLB; AND CLRNC. ALTHOUGH I HAD THE POMONA 6 IN FRONT OF ME; WITH THE XING RESTR OF 8000 FT AT POMONA VOR HIGHLIGHTED; I FAILED TO BRIEF IT. I DID BRIEF THAT I WAS GOING TO KEEP OUR CLB SPD BACK AT 210 KIAS SINCE WE WERE TAKING OFF IN THE WRONG DIRECTION; AND THAT I WANTED A 'VFR CLB' OVER THE MOUNTAINS. MY FO HAD NOT DONE A VFR CLB REQUEST AND WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH: 1) WHAT IT WAS; 2) HOW TO ASK FOR IT; AND 3) RESTRS IMPOSED; SUCH AS MAINTAINING OUR OWN TERRAIN CLRNC AND ALT RESTRS. THIS WAS MY FIRST OF A SERIES OF MISTAKES LEADING TO THE BUST. THE SECOND WAS MY USE (IMPROPER) OF THE AUTOMATED COCKPIT. THE POM 6 DEP WAS LOADED INTO THE FMC CORRECTLY; WITH THE 8000 FT RESTR AT POMONA. OUR COMPANY PROCS ARE TO CLB TO 3000 FT AGL AT CLEAN MINIMUM MANEUVERING AIRSPD; THEN ACCELERATE TO 250 KIAS. I IMPROPERLY SHUT OFF THE FLT DIRECTOR OUT OF 4000 FT MSL ON THE CLB; AS IT WAS COMMANDING NOSE DOWN TO ACCELERATE TO 250 KIAS; WHICH I DID NOT WANT TO DO. (I SHOULD HAVE PROGRAMMED 210 KIAS INTO FMC UNTIL 14000 FT.) BY DOING THIS; I SHUT OFF THE ONLY WAY I HAD OF COMPLYING WITH THE 8000 FT RESTR OVER THE POMONA VOR. (I WILL NOW PUT ALL RESTRS INTO THE ALT ALERTER; EVEN IF LOWER THAN OUR CLRNC. I WILL ALSO BRIEF THIS PRIOR TO DEP.) AS WE PASSED THE VOR; THE CTLR ASKED US ABOUT THE 8000 FT RESTR; AS WE CLBED OUT OF 10400 FT. I LEVELED OFF THE ACFT; BUT WE HAD PASSED THE VOR.
