INFLT ENG SHUTDOWN ON ACR FLT DURING AN OVERWATER OP. OCEANIC AIRSPACE.

Narrative

WHEN CLRED TO FL350 FROM FL310 ACFT STARTED CLB. AT FL315 #2 ENG STARTED VIBRATING SEVERELY ALONG WITH A RAPID RISE IN EGT TO 570 DEGS. THROTTLE WAS IMMEDIATELY PULLED BACK TO IDLE. VIBRATIONS STOPPED AND EGT DECREASED. NY OCEANIC WAS NOTIFIED AND CLRNC WAS REQUESTED TO FL270 AND DIRECT TO CYYT. #2 THROTTLE WAS ADVANCED SLIGHTLY AND VIBRATIONS RETURNED; IT WAS IMMEDIATELY RETARDED WHERE IT STABILIZED. AFTER ANOTHER 3 TO 4 MINS VIBRATION STARTED AGAIN AND EGT STARTED RISING WITH THROTTLE AT IDLE. ENG SHUTDOWN WITH EGT RISING RAPIDLY AND PASSING 580 DEGS. EMER DECLARED CLRNC RECEIVED DIRECT TO CYTT AT FL210. ACFT WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN FL310 UNTIL CLRNC TO LOWER ALT RECEIVED. CODE 7700 SET. REQUESTED EQUIP AT CYYT. LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. DEADHEAD CREW MEMBER CAME TO COCKPIT TO HELP WITH EMER AND WAS VERY VALUABLE IN ASSISTING THE 2 PILOT CREW. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 294543: ENG HAD COMPRESSOR STALL. 3 MAN CREW MADE A SERIOUS PROB MUCH MORE CONTROLLABLE. RECOMMEND 3 MAN CREW ON ALL LONG RANGE FLTS. CREW CONCEPT AND COORD PARAMOUNT IN THIS SIT MUCH SAFER WITH ADDITIONAL CREW MEMBER.
