SMA ON TRAINING FLT HAS GEAR UP LNDG.

Narrative

FLT WAS BIANNUAL REVIEW. EARLY IN FLT; BREAKER WOULD TRIP BEFORE FULL RETRACTION. THIS WAS CURED WHEN ALTERNATOR BREAKER WAS RESET. FLT CONTINUED AS GEAR RETRACTED PROPERLY. CONTINUED MANEUVERS INCLUDING 2 360-DEG TURNS WITH GEAR RETRACTED. INSTRUCTOR CALLED FOR A SIMULATED EMER LNDG; AFTER CIRCLING (ABOVE OSC) AND ON DOWNWIND; WE STARTED GUMP CHK; HE CALLED 'GEAR ALREADY DOWN.' I DIDN'T LOOK BUT DID REST OF CHK. WE LANDED GEAR UP WITHOUT HEARING A HORN. 3 MONTHS (ABOUT) BEFORE HORN WAS GOING OFF ABOUT 21-22 INCHES. I ASKED REPAIR SHOP (WHO ALSO OPERATES HANGAR WHERE PLANE IS HOUSED) TO ADJUST IT. THEY DID; SAYING FULL ADJUSTMENT WASN'T POSSIBLE WITHOUT SPENDING MUCH MORE TIME AND ENERGY; SO THEY JUST 'TURNED IT DOWN A LITTLE' AWAITING THE ANNUAL WHICH SHOULD BE DONE WITHIN A FEW MONTHS. IN RETROSPECT; HORN DIDN'T FUNCTION ON EARLIER FLTS. FACTORS: MAKE OWN GUMP CHK AND DON'T DEPEND ON ANOTHER (EVEN AN INSTRUCTOR OF VERY LONG EXPERIENCE). LOOK AT GEAR LIGHT YOURSELF. HORN SHOULD HAVE BEEN RPTED AS NOT OPERATING AFTER ADJUSTMENT. IT REALLY WASN'T CHKED IN OP AND RPTED TO REPAIR SHOP.
