UNAUTH PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE - RESTR AREA.
Narrative
ON A JAN/MON/95 I DELIVERED MY CESSNA 310 TO A REPAIR STATION IN CENTRAL FLORIDA FOR OVERHAUL OF MY AUTOPLT. ON JAN/TUE/95; I PICKED UP THE ACFT AND; WITH THE REPAIR FACILITY OWNER; TEST FLEW THE AIRPLANE. EVERYTHING SEEMED OK; AFTER SOME ADJUSTMENTS; AND I DEPARTED VFR TO MY HOME STATION IN WEST PALM BEACH; FL. I CLBED TO 2500 FT; TURNED ON THE AUTOPLT; AND CALLED ORLANDO APCH FOR CLRNC THROUGH THEIR CLASS B AIRSPACE AND RADAR VECTORS TO AVOID THE AVON PARK RESTR AREAS. ORLANDO GAVE ME A XPONDER CODE WHICH I SET. MY XPONDER WAS RPTED INOP AND I REMAINED CLR OF ORLANDO'S AIRSPACE. I SET A COURSE ON MY DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE TO AVOID AVON PARK. I THEN DISCOVERED THAT MY DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE WAS PRECESSING MORE THAN 10 DEG PER MIN WHICH PUT ME SEVERAL MI TO THE W OF MY DESIRED TRACK. BY XBEARINGS ON LAKELAND AND ORLANDO VORS. I RPTED MY POS TO ORLANDO AT THE E EDGE OF AVON PARK R2401. AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO THE EAST TOOK ME OUT OF THE AREA AND I TURNED OFF THE AUTOPLT AND NAVIGATED BY THE LIQUID COMPASS INTO WEST PALM. IN THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING A NEW ATTITUDE INDICATOR; THE REPAIR FACILITY APPARENTLY LEFT MY DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE WITH LITTLE OR NO VACUUM. ALSO; IN THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING THE ATTITUDE INDICATOR; IT WAS NECESSARY TO REMOVE MY XPONDER FROM ITS TRAY. APPARENTLY; WHEN IT WAS PUT BACK; THE CONNECTORS FAILED TO MAKE CONTACT. ACFT NOW IN SHOP TO CORRECT THESE MALFUNCTIONS.
