PLT OF AN SMA SEL INADVERTENTLY PENETRATED CLASS B AIRSPACE DURING A VFR DEP FROM ONE OF MANY ARPTS BENEATH THE AIRSPACE. IN PROX OF MULTIPLE ARPTS.

Narrative

DEP FROM TEB UNDER DEP CTL WITH IDENT CODE ENRTE TO ORH. CLR SKY 30 NM VISIBILITY. INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO MAKE A L TURN AND NOT ENTER CLASS B (NY) AIRSPACE (ENRTE TO VOR CMX VIA TAPANZEE BRIDGE). AFTER CLRING ARPT VICINITY AND MAINTAINING 1500 FT FOR ABOUT 3 MINS AT 160 KTS I BEGAN A CLB AND PENETRATED THE FLOOR OF CLASS B AIRSPACE WHICH I HAD THOUGHT WAS 3000 FT FOR MY AREA. BUT THERE WAS AN 1800 FT EXTENSION I MISJUDGED ON MY TCA CHART. THIS WAS AN UNFAMILIAR ARPT AND THE FIXES I WAS USING WERE A MI AHEAD OF THE PLANE. DEP NOTIFIED ME OF THE PENETRATION AND I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED. I WAS THEN HANDED OFF TO NY DEP AND GIVEN PERMISSION TO ENTER THE AIRSPACE AND CLB. UPON REFLECTION AND STUDYING THE CHART CLOSER I COULD SEE HOW I CLBED TOO EARLY IN THE CONGESTED SPACE AROUND TEB. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO OTHER PLANES IN THE AREA (BUT THAT IS WHY I WANTED TO CLB OUT OF POSSIBLE LOW LEVEL POTENTIAL CONFLICTS; ASAP). THE 30 NM LORAN WARNING IS FINE BUT ONCE UNDER A TCA/CLASS B VISUAL REFS ARE PRIMARILY THE FACTORS TO DETERMINE LIMITS UNLESS A FIXED RTE IS PLANNED; AND THEN THE DME READOUT WOULD SOMEWHAT HELP. ALTERNATIVELY WHEN WARNED TO STAY CLR OF CLASS B AND ALT REMINDER WOULD OFFER ADDITIONAL HELP TO THE PLT WHO IS JUGGLING ENOUGH CHKLIST ITEMS AND TRYING TO GAUGE LOCATION VISUALLY. A MAP IS NOT ALWAYS PRECISE.
