Narrative
MY STUDENT AND I TOOK OFF FROM MMU IN A C-152 ON A XCOUNTRY TO DANBURY; CT. OUR PLAN WAS MMU DIRECT CMK VORTAC DIRECT DXR (TOUCH AND GO) DIRECT CMK TAPANZE BRIDGE FOLLOWING THE HUDSON RIVER IN THE VFR CORRIDOR TO THE STATUE OF LIBERTY THEN OVER NEWARK CLASS B AIRSPACE DIRECT MMU. ON THE WAY TO DXR WE WERE EXPERIENCING LIGHT TURB AND WE HAD A TAILWIND OF APPROX 10-15 KTS. WE DID THE TOUCH AND GO 30 MINS AFTER TKOF FROM MMU. WE NEEDED ANOTHER 20 MINS TO REACH THE BRIDGE AND STARTED A DSCNT TO 1000 FT MSL FROM 2500 FT MSL. WE PASSED THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE AT 1000 FT MSL AND DSNDED DOWN TO 800 FT MSL WE EXPERIENCED A SLIGHT INCREASE IN TURB. MY STUDENT WHO HAD THE CTLS DSNDED ALL THE WAY TO 600 FT MSL; WHEN I TOLD HIM TO CLB TO 800 FT MSL. RIGHT AT THE MOMENT WHEN WE WERE LEVELING OFF AT 800 FT MSL; WE EXPERIENCED ONE BIG BUMP. IT FELT LIKE WE FELL STRAIGHT DOWN AND LOST ALL THE LIFT ON THE WINGS. WHEN WE RECOVERED FROM THE BUMP; I NOTICED THE ENG WAS AT IDLE. I ADDED PWR AND WHEN THE ENG DID NOT REACT I TOOK THE CTLS AND PUMPED ON THE THROTTLE. THE ENG WAS STILL WINDMILLING. I HEARD THE ENG WAS STILL ON SO I STARTED THE EMER CHKLIST. I SAW A FIELD ON MY R SIDE AND I DECIDED TO AIM FOR THAT IN CASE WE HAD TO MAKE AN EMER LNDG. WHILE TURNING TOWARDS THE FIELD I TRIED TO RESTART THE ENG. ON FINAL APCH I MANAGED TO START THE ENG AND I ADDED FULL PWR AND STARTED TO RECOVER. RIGHT THEN ENG QUIT TOTALLY. I SAW WE WERE TOO FAST TO MAKE THE FIELD. AT THIS TIME WE WERE GLIDING OVER THE FIELD. THE ONLY THING I SAW WAS A ROAD ON THE L SIDE SO I WENT FOR THE ROAD. I HAD TO MAKE A R TURN TO LINE UP WITH THE ROAD. WHILE TURNING WE HIT A TFC LIGHT WITH THE L WING. NEXT THING I REMEMBER WE WERE ON THE GND. NO ONE WAS HURT. MY STUDENT HAD A SCRATCH ON HIS KNEE AND I HAD A SCRATCH ON MY HAND. FUEL SIT: AT START UP IN MMU: 18 GAL; USED FOR TAXI; RUNUP; TKOF: 1.5 GALS; USED ENRTE TO DXR: 3.0 GALS; DXR TO TAPPANESE BRIDGE: 2.5 GALS; TOTAL AT THE ENG FAILURE: 11.0 GALS; RESERVE 30 MIN: 3 GALS; TOTAL LEFT: 8 GALS GOOD FOR AN ADDED 1.3 HRS AT NORMAL CRUISE SPD.
